At just 21 years old, Makayla Andrews has already made a name for herself in the world of ballroom dancing. With a foundation in dance that began at the tender age of two, she has navigated various styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary. However, it was her discovery of ballroom dancing during the COVID-19 pandemic that truly transformed her journey as a dancer.
Having pursued ballet seriously, Andrews was enrolled in a prestigious ballet conservatory by the age of 14. Despite her dedication, the strict environment and demanding regime ultimately led to a waning passion for the art form. “I fell out of love with ballet,” she shared, revealing that her experience in the dance conservatory was harsher than anticipated. It wasn’t until a new friendship with a student skilled in Latin ballroom dancing shifted her perspective that she considered a new path.

Encouraged by her friend, Andrews attended a ballroom class and was immediately captivated. “I remember saying to my mum, ‘I’m done with ballet, I want to do ballroom.'” However, with the commitment she had made, her mother advised her to complete the year at the conservatory. The unexpected turn of events came when the pandemic led to a shutdown of her ballet school, freeing her to explore ballroom dancing in earnest.
During the lockdown, Andrews’ mother took the initiative to reach out to former professional dancer Lacey Schwimmer, asking her to provide ballroom lessons via Zoom. To Andrews’ delight, Schwimmer agreed, and soon she was immersed in Latin ballroom practice online. Once studios reopened, she returned to a local ballroom school, where her enthusiasm for dance thrived.
Reflecting on her five years of ballroom experience, Andrews expresses immense satisfaction in her growth as a dancer. “The most rewarding part is seeing your progress over the years,” she said. Competing regularly, she has now secured a commendable position, ranking third in the world in her age category within the pro-am division.
Currently, Andrews dances four to five days a week, dedicating two to three hours per session, a lifestyle she finds more enjoyable compared to her ballet training. “The competition schedule is a bit different for me; I am selective and aim for four to five competitions a year,” she explained, highlighting that while some dancers compete weekly, she opts for a more financially manageable approach.
Andrews describes ballroom dancing as a striking contrast to ballet, where dancers often adhere to rigid rules. “In ballroom, you get to add your personality and flair. I like being sassy on the floor,” she shared, emphasising how the vibrant atmosphere allows her to express herself freely. Dressed in costume, she transforms into what she describes as a “diva” ready to captivate the audience.
As a ranked dancer and content creator on social media, Andrews shares glimpses of her dance journey. She often posts videos showcasing the elaborate preparations that go into her performances, from hair styling to makeup, as well as the less glamorous side of the process. Her followers appreciate the behind-the-scenes access to her experiences.
Andrews also tackles misconceptions surrounding ballroom dancing, particularly the notion that it is only for children. “People believe that you have to start young and that there’s an age limit. That’s simply not true,” she asserts, pointing out that individuals of all ages, even as late as their 80s or 90s, can take up ballroom dancing. She encourages those who are intrigued by the art form to pursue it, regardless of when they begin.
For aspiring dancers who wish to follow in her footsteps, Andrews underscores the importance of seizing the moment. “You can start at any stage in life,” she says, highlighting the abundance of opportunities available for newcomers inspired by popular shows like *Dancing with the Stars*.
In a world where young athletes often feel pressured to choose a singular path, Makayla Andrews exemplifies how passion and adaptability can lead to delightful discoveries—in her case, a flourishing dance career as a ballroom dancer. With a blend of dedication, fun, and a willingness to embrace new challenges, Andrews proves that the world of dance is accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age.
