Stefano Gabbana, the co-founder of the renowned fashion label Dolce & Gabbana, has officially stepped down from his position as chairman, though he will maintain his influence in creative affairs. This change follows recent reports highlighting the company’s financial challenges, including discussions regarding significant debt obligations.

Gabbana, aged 63, established Dolce & Gabbana in 1985 alongside his former partner, Domenico Dolce. In a statement released by the brand on 10 April, the company confirmed that Gabbana’s resignation would take effect from 1 January 2026. While his role as chairman is relinquished, Gabbana will continue to design collections and contribute creatively to the brand.

The statement read, “As part of a natural evolution of its organisational structure and governance, the Dolce & Gabbana Group confirms that Stefano Gabbana has tendered his resignation, effective as of 1 January 2026, from his positions within Dolce & Gabbana Holding Srl, Dolce & Gabbana Trademarks Srl, and Dolce & Gabbana Srl. These resignations have no impact whatsoever on the creative activities carried out by Stefano Gabbana on behalf of the group.”
The announcement comes in the wake of concerns raised by Bloomberg, which reported that Dolce & Gabbana were engaging in discussions with lenders regarding the company’s financial status and mounting debt. It was also mentioned that Gabbana was contemplating options to divest his 40 per cent stake in the fashion powerhouse.
Responding to inquiries about their financial standing, the company stated: “With regard to the debt position, the group has no statement to make at this time, as negotiations with the banks are still ongoing.” This statement underscores the uncertainty surrounding the brand’s financial future.
According to additional reports, Domenico Dolce’s brother, Alfonso Dolce, assumed the role of chairman in January, possibly signalling a shift in leadership dynamics within the company. This new chapter comes as Dolce & Gabbana celebrates 41 years in the fashion industry, a testament to its enduring legacy despite recent hurdles.
Dolce & Gabbana have faced pressure to restructure, with lenders requiring up to €150 million in new funding as part of a broader refinancing strategy aimed at managing the label’s existing debt, which totals around €450 million (approximately £385 million).
The brand’s most recent runway show took place in February during Milan Fashion Week, drawing significant attention and attendance from prominent personalities, including the iconic Madonna. Dolce & Gabbana has built a reputation for its collaborations with a host of celebrities, including the likes of Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, further solidifying its standing in the luxury fashion domain.
Despite the leadership changes and financial discussions, Gabbana’s continued involvement in the creative side of the company indicates a commitment to maintaining the brand’s artistic integrity while navigating the path forward amid economic challenges. The future of Dolce & Gabbana remains to be seen, but its rich history and established presence in the fashion world suggest that this iconic label may adapt and evolve through this unsettling period.
