Lena Dunham, the creator of the acclaimed television series *Girls*, has shared her thoughts on a recent consultation for cosmetic surgery as she approaches her 40th birthday. In a candid TikTok post, the 39-year-old actress and filmmaker recounted her experience with a dermatologist who also practices plastic surgery, reflecting on the unexpected advice she received.

In her TikTok video, Dunham, who will turn 40 on May 13, expressed her surprise at her consultation’s outcome. “So I am going to be 40 in about a month,” she shared while lounging in bed, acknowledging the astonishment this revelation might bring to her viewers. “I went to see a doctor, a dermatologist. She also is a plastic surgeon. Let’s call it what it is. She’s a plastic surgeon,” Dunham elaborated, setting the stage for her upcoming journey into cosmetic considerations.
During the consultation, Dunham posed a pointed question to the doctor: “If I were to fully let you loose on my face, money were no object, healing were no object, just tell me what would you do?” Though she anticipated the professional might dismiss her ideas as overly ambitious, the response was quite the opposite.
To her surprise, the dermatologist indicated a more restrained approach, telling Dunham that she wouldn’t advise drastic measures. Instead, she emphasised the importance of accentuating her natural beauty. “I like to really highlight my client’s natural beauty,” Dunham recounted, adding that the expert pointed out her strongest features lay between her brow and just below her nose.
However, the actress’s reaction to this revelation took a darker turn. She said, “Okay, so I was like okay, so what you can see through a criminal ski mask? And the rest you would obliterate in a meat grinder basically?” This tongue-in-cheek comment highlighted her struggle with how her appearance has been perceived over the years.
Dunham has been open about the negative comments she has received regarding her looks throughout her career. In recognition of the 13th anniversary of *Girls*, she penned an introspective Instagram post that revealed her ongoing reflections on body image. She noted that significant scrutiny of her appearance began at a young age, recalling how the feedback she received often focused on conventional beauty standards.
“The feedback that came at me – at least the feedback I could hear – was about all the ways that young body was unacceptable,” Dunham wrote, highlighting that she was only 25 when *Girls* premiered on HBO in April 2012. As part of her retrospective, she expressed gratitude for her past experiences, suggesting that her history of public critique has helped her navigate the challenges of ageing and changing appearance more comfortably.
In her follow-up remarks, Dunham reflected on how years spent absorbing negative commentary have desensitised her to the inevitable transformations of her body. “As a result of my years dabbling in the comments section, the shifts in my human form – ageing, illness, scrapes and scars – haven’t rattled me like they could have,” she said.
Despite the struggles with body image and societal pressure, Dunham concluded her post on a note of optimism. “Happy anniversary little girl – proud of you, you wild, weird and all knowing idiot,” she encouraged herself, exuding positivity while reassuring her followers, “It’s going to be ok. It already is!”
Looking ahead, Dunham is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film, *Good Sex*, a comedy starring Natalie Portman that will debut on Netflix later this year. With her characteristic candour, she continues to navigate her personal and professional life while encouraging others to embrace their unique journeys.
