As Halloween approaches, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Paul Pastelok has provided an optimistic forecast for trick-or-treaters across the United States in 2026. The predictions are comparatively mild compared to previous years, leading Pastelok to describe the upcoming weather as “fairly quiet.”

In a recently shared insight with PEOPLE, Pastelok indicated that the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions are poised for predominantly clear skies and comfortable temperatures on the 31st of October. These conditions are expected to be favourable for families preparing to take their children out for traditional Halloween festivities, allowing for a more enjoyable evening.

Citizens in areas such as the Carolinas, the Eastern Ohio Valley, and parts of the Eastern Great Lakes, including cities like Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh, are also expected to experience pleasant weather. “It’s pretty mild for most areas, and comfortable, so that looks like a good sign for this Halloween,” Pastelok reassured.
However, as evening falls, a drop in temperatures is anticipated, which may require trick-or-treaters to don a light jacket or sweatshirt underneath their costumes. Parents are advised to prepare their little ones for a potentially cooler night, despite the initially warm weather.
Conversely, not all regions will experience such favourable conditions. The Gulf Coast is likely to be impacted by wet weather, with rain forecasted from east Texas extending to Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Pastelok warned that residents in these areas should prepare for increased rainfall, and possibly even some thunder.
Additionally, light showers may occur along Florida’s east coast around the time children are out collecting sweets. Winds could also be a factor in the state, further complicating outdoor plans. Families in the South are, therefore, advised to equip their children with clear ponchos while trick-or-treating, despite the less-than-stylish appearance.
While a generally dry and comfortable night is predicted for the northern Plains, there remains a slight chance of rain affecting Halloween activities in the Chicago area. Southern California, including Los Angeles, may also see significant rainfall throughout the day, with potential for precipitation extending into the evening.
In a twist, higher elevations in the western United States might witness snow due to an upper-level system, which could bring flurries to parts of Idaho, Utah, and northern Nevada. Despite these nuanced weather variations, much of the Southwest, including cities like Phoenix, Tucson, and Las Vegas, is expected to bask in warm temperatures on Halloween.
Overall, given the absence of severe weather events or a major cold front, Pastelok expresses a reassuring stance on this year’s Halloween forecast. He noted, “It could be more extreme than it is. It really isn’t,” and reiterated, “Compared to other years, it’s fairly quiet in my opinion.”
Families planning their Halloween festivities can take comfort in the forecast, as many regions will enjoy relatively pleasant weather. While some may encounter challenges in specific areas, the general consensus is upbeat as the spooky season nears. With a mix of forecasts across the nation, one thing is for certain: Halloween 2026 will bring a varied array of conditions, but most will likely see more treats than tricks in the sky.
