Gold Miner Rescued After 14 Days Trapped Underground in Flooded Tunnel Says ‘I Didn’t Lose Faith’

A gold miner in northern Mexico has been successfully rescued after spending 14 harrowing days trapped underground in a flooded tunnel. The man, identified as Francisco Zapata Nájera, aged 42, was working in a mine located in the state of Sinaloa when disaster struck on March 25, following the collapse of an embankment and a subsequent dam burst.

At the time of the incident, twenty-five miners were inside the site. While twenty-one were able to escape, four others were left behind. Among them, José Alejandro Cástulo was rescued after five days, while unfortunately, the body of another miner, who perished in the incident, was later recovered as confirmed by the Mexico-based newspaper El Universal.

After spending approximately 300 hours buried deep underground, rescue divers finally located Zapata on April 8. Divers spotted his flashlight in the flooded section of the mine, signalling his presence. “I didn’t lose faith, I didn’t lose faith,” he expressed to his rescuers, conveying his determination to survive despite the dire circumstances.

Owing to the extensive flooding in the mine, rescuers faced challenges in retrieving him immediately and had to leave him in situ with basic supplies, including cans of tuna fish and energy bars. The rescue operation continued as teams worked meticulously to lower the water levels using pumps. After a further twenty hours, they were able to bring Zapata back to the surface. Wrapped in a thermal blanket, he was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was able to reunite with his family.

Upon his arrival at the hospital, doctors reported that Zapata was suffering from dehydration but was in a stable condition. His condition is currently being closely monitored as he receives care and attention following his distressing ordeal.

As the search continues for the final miner still trapped in the underground tunnel, authorities are mobilising resources from various agencies, including the Navy and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection. Efforts to locate the missing individual remain ongoing, with hopes still alive for a successful outcome.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum commended the members of the Mexican Army Emergency Response Battalion for their exceptional efforts during the rescue. She also praised Zapata’s resilience and unwavering faith throughout the ordeal. “The faith and resilience of a miner made this amazing rescue possible after 13 days. I’m sure that each and every Mexican has our hearts with you,” she wrote.

The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that often accompany the mining industry in Mexico. This rescue comes almost four years after ten miners lost their lives during a flooding incident at the El Pinabete coal mine in Coahuila in August 2022. Sadly, the bodies of those miners were never recovered.

The deadliest mining accident in Mexico’s history occurred in February 2006 at the Pasta de Conchos coal mine, where it is believed that 65 miners were trapped due to an explosion. Although 27 bodies were recovered, many families have continued to seek closure since that disaster.

As the search and rescue teams continue their operations, the nation watches with bated breath, hoping for the safe recovery of the remaining trapped miner while celebrating the miraculous rescue of Francisco Zapata Nájera, whose remarkable spirit and the dedication of the rescue teams led to his return to safety.
