A Minnesota couple, Shacreya and Nicholas Lee, are transforming their challenging experiences in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) into a beacon of support for other families facing similar battles. After spending an incredible 517 days in the NICU with their two youngest children, Brave and Faith, the couple has founded The Brave Foundation, aimed at providing emotional and practical assistance to NICU families.
Shacreya Lee, a 36-year-old mother of three, vividly recalls the emotional tumult of her NICU journey. Reflecting on her time spent in the unit, she describes the experience as a relentless “battle between hope and heartbreak.” “I was completely and utterly broken,” she shares, illustrating how the trauma of her experiences reshaped her life.

The journey started with the premature birth of their son Brave, who arrived four months early, weighing only 1 lb. His stay in the NICU spanned 11 months and involved 21 surgeries and numerous blood transfusions. Just under a year later, the couple faced yet another NICU admission, this time with their daughter Faith, born at just five months of gestation and weighing a mere 14 oz. The sheer weight of their experiences led Shacreya to feel overwhelmed as they clocked up over a year in hospital across two years.

Shacreya describes the emotional conflict she faced during this time. “I didn’t know whether to feel joy that I had just given birth or devastation over how critically ill my baby was,” she reflects, recalling the numbing shock of the situation. The couple became enveloped in a world filled not with typical parenting joys, but with the sounds of alarms, medical jargon, and the weight of constant uncertainty.
There were days when the physical and emotional burden felt insurmountable. Shacreya articulates moments of despair, drowning in fatigue and grief. Yet, she felt compelled to show up for her children each day. “Sometimes strength doesn’t look like confidence. Sometimes it just looks like showing up, even when you’re falling apart,” she emphasises.
Throughout this arduous ordeal, unwavering support from her husband, family, and NICU nurses became paramount. The encouragement they provided helped Shacreya combat feelings of hopelessness while staying focused on her children’s needs. She believes her faith played a crucial role, anchoring her during the darkest times.
As the couple emerged from their NICU journey, they realised their experience was not unique. The residual emotional toll often lingers long after discharge, a reality that many NICU parents find difficult to articulate. To address these challenges, Shacreya established The Brave Foundation, with a mission to reduce feelings of isolation for families during such a vulnerable time.
“I never want another NICU parent to feel as alone as I did in those moments,” she states. With her foundation, Shacreya aims to provide reassurance: “I see you. I understand. You’re not alone.” The pain from her NICU experiences is still present, yet she has chosen to channel it into purposeful outreach for others.
Through The Brave Foundation, families receive curated “Brave Boxes” filled with comfort items and essentials to ease their stay in the NICU. Additionally, the foundation sets up “Purple Bins” in parent spaces, containing self-care items to help caregivers carve out moments of relief from the stress. The foundation also offers peer support and advocacy, guiding families during and after their time in hospital.
As the foundation grows, Shacreya is keen to focus on meaningful connections rather than sheer numbers. “It’s never just about numbers. It’s about impact. Every single box and every connection matters,” she notes, highlighting the tailored support they strive to provide.
Reflecting on her journey, Shacreya wishes to reassure NICU parents that their circumstances are not indicative of personal failure. “I need you to release that guilt,” she urges, urging them to focus on celebrating even the smallest victories. She offers solace to those overwhelmed by the emotional weight of their experiences, encouraging parents to allow themselves to feel their emotions fully, as they are not alone in their struggle.
Shacreya’s heartfelt message to fellow NICU families encapsulates her vision for The Brave Foundation: “Take this journey one moment at a time. Celebrate the smallest victories. There is a community of parents who understand this pain, this fight, this love, and even here, there is still hope.” As she continues to support others, Shacreya Lee proves that even the most challenging circumstances can be transformed into a source of strength and healing for those in need.
