The popular Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is set to welcome visitors once more on May 3, following an extensive renovation that started in January 2025. This beloved roller coaster, known for its thrilling ride through a gold mine, has been closed for over 16 months, but the enhancements are designed to improve the experience for both new and returning guests.

Recently announced on the official Disney Parks Blog, the ride will feature significant updates. These include a completely new track, revamped vehicles, and a new ride control system, which aims to enhance safety and comfort. Notably, the height requirement has also been lowered from 40 inches to 38 inches, allowing younger guests to enjoy the attraction.
Situated in the Frontierland section of the Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad transports riders through the rugged landscapes of the American Southwest. Since its opening in September 1979, the ride has become a staple of Disney World, known for its captivating theming and exhilarating twists and turns.
Project engineer Nicholas Roedl shared insights into the renovation process. “On the ride engineering side, we replaced the track, the vehicles, and the ride control system,” he explained. He emphasized that the enhancements make the ride more comfortable than ever. “Because of all of that work we put in, it’s just as comfortable if not more than it ever has been in the past,” Roedl added.
One of the most exciting new features is the introduction of the Rainbow Caverns, which promise a visually stunning addition to the ride. Guests will find themselves gliding through colourful underground caverns adorned with phosphorescent pools, as well as iridescent stalagmites and stalactites. However, Roedl hinted that these beautiful visuals may not be as friendly as they first seem. The Disney Parks Blog ominously suggested that the “menacing rumble” echoing from within the mountain might indicate that guests are not entirely welcome.
The anticipation for the reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is palpable, especially as it follows the recent refurbishment of another fan-favourite attraction. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which invites riders to join the iconic character in a battle against the evil emperor Zurg, reopened on April 8. The ride, which was first introduced in November 1998, also underwent significant updates during its closure.
