Teen Thought He Was Meeting a Girl. But Prosecutors Say He Was Walking into a Deadly Setup

In a tragic incident in Springfield, Missouri, 15-year-old Miles Young was shot and killed in what prosecutors describe as a deliberate ambush involving a group of teenagers. The shocking event occurred on the evening of March 12, as Young was reportedly misled into meeting a girl who had claimed to have romantic intentions.

Authorities have alleged that Miles was driving in a black Mercedes with the unidentified girl, referred to in court documents as “Juvenile Suspect 1.” Prior to meeting Young, the girl, alongside 18-year-olds Yefry Archaga and another unnamed individual, allegedly discussed “setting up” the young boy. This disturbing premeditated plot unfolded whilst Young’s friends advised him against meeting the girl, having sensed that it was a potential trap. They warned him that the girl had previously expressed her dislike for him and implicated him in a past homicide case.

Young was intended to testify in proceedings related to a homicide that took place in 2025, which complicated his circumstances further. As the pair drove, another vehicle containing the alleged gunman, Archaga, stopped in front of them to obstruct their path. Investigators report that upon exiting the vehicle, Young attempted to flee the scene but was pursued by Archaga, who was donned in a black ski mask and brandishing a handgun.

Witnesses recall the harrowing final moments of Young’s life; one individual on the phone with him heard him cry out, “I just don’t wanna die,” moments after gunfire erupted. Tragically, he was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The investigation led to the arrest of Archaga on March 31, following a thorough two-week search, along with another teen, Praize King, who was detained on March 18. Both have been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, with Archaga currently held without bond. He is additionally facing a federal immigration detainer. King is also being held without bond, as it stands.

The organiser of the campaign described Miles as an individual with a “beautiful heart”, who brought joy and care to everyone around him. Friends and family remember him fondly for his compassion and kindness towards others, making the circumstances of his death even more devastating.
