In a significant move to address the growing shortage of skilled tradespeople in the United States, the Lowe’s Foundation has announced a noteworthy investment of $250 million aimed at training 250,000 individuals over the next ten years. This ambitious initiative, unveiled on April 7, forms part of the foundation’s Gable Grants program, which is designed to tackle a pressing workforce crisis in the construction industry.

The urgency behind this initiative has been underscored by a recent report from the Associated Builders and Contractors, which revealed that a staggering 349,000 new construction workers will be required to meet this year’s demand alone. This data highlights the critical gap in the workforce that Lowe’s seeks to address with its new training programme.
This latest announcement expands upon the foundation’s earlier commitment made in 2023, which pledged $50 million over five years to assist in training 50,000 tradespeople. The response has been promising, with nearly $53 million already channelled into 65 organisations, putting the foundation ahead of schedule to meet its initial target by 2027.
Marvin Ellison, chairman and CEO of Lowe’s, remarked on the importance of this workforce initiative, stating, “Three years ago, we set out to lead an ambitious workforce movement in a pivotal moment, and it has taken off faster than we imagined. American prosperity is at stake, and we are partnering to solve the workforce gap with a growing force of educators, employers, and policymakers who understand local needs.”
To fulfil the ambitious goal of training 250,000 tradespeople, Lowe’s aims to broaden its collaboration with non-profit organisations and community colleges across the nation. By enhancing programme capacity and minimising barriers to training, the foundation hopes to create more accessible pathways for prospective tradespeople.
An integral component of this initiative will be the expansion of Lowe’s partnership with the National Centre for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). This collaboration is expected to enhance the CareerStarter platform, which offers a free service that connects students and job seekers directly with educational resources, employers, and potential career opportunities. Additionally, the foundation plans to target its training efforts towards young individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 who are currently not in school or employed.
The personal impact of skilled trades training is encapsulated in the experience of Cleveland Roberts, who completed a carpentry programme at Columbus Technical College in Georgia through the Gable Grants Programme. “Skilled trades training gave me more than a job; it gave me upward mobility and the confidence to build something for myself and my community,” Roberts stated. His journey showcases the potential of skilled trades training in transforming lives and empowering individuals.
In a complementary effort, Lowe’s Foundation is also set to launch a new docuseries entitled “Building Back America’s Trades,” premiering on April 11 on Magnolia Network. This three-part series aims to shine a spotlight on tradespeople making a difference in their communities and will be available for streaming on HBO Max and discovery+ the following day. The series features 12 tradespeople, including Roberts, along with their mentors, illustrating the profound impact that these careers can have.
The foundation’s commitment reflects a broader recognition of the essential role that tradespeople play in society. As construction demands intensify, initiatives like Lowe’s Gable Grants programme are not just timely but crucial in ensuring a skilled workforce for the future. By investing in training and resources, Lowe’s is laying the groundwork for a sustainable solution to the trades shortage that has plagued the sector.
As the nation grapples with workforce shortages, initiatives such as this one by Lowe’s Foundation serve as a beacon of hope for combating the skills gap. Through collaboration with educational institutions and a focus on youth engagement, the foundation is paving the way for a new generation of skilled tradespeople, thus reinforcing the importance of these vital professions in the fabric of American industry.
