Sharanya went missing on April 2 while trekking towards Tadiandamol peak, reportedly losing her way in thick forest. Karnataka’s Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Eshwar Khandre, confirmed her rescue via a Facebook post, expressing relief that she had been located and was in good health. “Arrangements have been made to ensure she gets home safely,” Khandre added.

According to Sharanya, the incident began around 10:40 a.m. when she and her companions were on their descent from the peak. After opting to wait for her friends who were resting, she realised she had lost sight of them and, in an attempt to reconnect, began to trek back up the mountain. Unfortunately, she soon realised that she was in unfamiliar territory.
Reports state that Sharanya was part of a larger group of 15 hikers, which included a nature guide. As the dense forest obscured her surroundings, she became increasingly disoriented and by 6:45 p.m. found herself isolated and alone.
Reflecting on her harrowing experience, Sharanya described the forest as an enchanting environment despite her predicament. “As darkness fell, the forest came alive with the sound of cicadas and the glow of fireflies. It was the first time I had ever seen a night in the forest, and it was stunning,” she recounted in an interview with *The Times of India*.
While she had exhausted her food supply—having consumed only a banana—Sharanya managed to stay hydrated by drinking from a nearby stream, which provided her with three litres of water. However, she encountered challenges including leg pain and heavy rainfall, and even spotted monkeys during her time in the woods.
After four days of uncertainty, she heard voices while exploring an open area at the peak. When she realised the callers were locals searching for her, she signalled her presence by shaking a tree branch, which enabled them to locate her.
Despite the ordeal, Sharanya remains undeterred by her experience. She stated that she has plans for future hiking trips, specifically mentioning an upcoming journey to Tawang. “This experience didn’t frighten me from hiking; in fact, I’m looking forward to more adventures,” she commented.
The successful rescue of G.S. Sharanya serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures when engaging in outdoor activities. Local officials have praised the collaborative effort of the search teams that worked tirelessly to locate her, emphasising the need for hikers to be adequately prepared and aware of their surroundings.
As Sharanya recovers from her experience, her story inspires many and highlights the resilience of those who venture into nature, underscoring the captivating beauty of the great outdoors juxtaposed with the potential dangers it holds.
