Woman Finally Brings Baby Daughter Home from the Hospital After 236-Day Stay in the NICU

After spending a daunting 236 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Sharifa Jackson’s daughter Arya is finally heading home. Born prematurely at just 24 weeks on 13 August, Arya weighed a mere 1.1 pounds (approximately 500 grams) at birth and faced a challenging journey filled with medical complications.

Sharifa’s pregnancy initially progressed without complications, but everything took a sudden turn when she began feeling unwell. Within a matter of hours, she was admitted to the hospital where Arya was welcomed into the world. Reflecting on the day, Sharifa stated, “I knew she would come home one day. I just didn’t know when.” The uncertainty of Arya’s health and future loomed heavily over the family as they navigated the difficulties of NICU life.

For nearly eight months, Arya was cared for by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses. Throughout this time, she battled numerous health issues including a heart defect and severe lung disease, and underwent multiple blood transfusions. The intimacy of the situation surprised Sharifa, who admitted, “I didn’t know anything about a NICU or NICU life or a baby that could weigh one pound.”

Sharifa and her husband, Jaro, spent countless hours by Arya’s side, often praying for her recovery. Despite the weight of their worries, they also celebrated the small victories. In a memorable moment, Sharifa took Arya outside for the first time, allowing her to experience the sunshine. “It was a really sunny day. She got to go outside in the stroller… I think she decided, ‘You know what? I don’t want to be in this hospital room anymore,’” Sharifa recalled with a smile.

As the months passed, Arya began to make significant progress. She achieved various health milestones that accelerated the process of preparing her for discharge. The day Arya finally left the hospital was marked by an emotional send-off; doctors and nurses lined the hallway, cheering for the tiny miracle as she left the NICU behind.

The heartwarming scene filled Sharifa with mixed emotions. Reflecting on the moment, she shared, “I think we got on the steps and I said, ‘Whose baby is this?’ Not that I couldn’t imagine it happening, it was just so long that we got used to living in the NICU.” This transition felt surreal for Sharifa, who had spent nearly every day of Arya’s life in the hospital.

Sharifa expressed immense gratitude for the medical professionals who cared for Arya. “Everyone, our nurses, doctors from Jersey to CHOP, to King of Prussia—every person who cared for her loved her so much,” she said. The compassionate care provided by the staff allowed Sharifa to feel reassured even during the most difficult times, knowing that Arya was in good hands.

Now, as Arya embarks on her new chapter at home, Sharifa is hopeful for the future. The family is eager to integrate Arya into their daily lives, cherishing each moment after the long wait for her homecoming. The months spent in the NICU have reinforced the strength of their bond and the preciousness of life.
