Photographer Mark Allan Talks Finally Sharing Unseen Elton John and George Michael Photo He Took by Chance (Exclusive)

Without initially intending to, he managed to capture the moment on film. “I took the picture on my camera that was still… I don’t know who was on the film that night, but I wasn’t there to do that,” he laughingly admitted. For many years, that particular photograph became just a forgotten snapshot amid his extensive collection, as he expressed a reluctance to engage in the paparazzi lifestyle.

“I just thought, ‘Oh, one day I might use that picture,'” he said, although he was clearly weary of the nature of paparazzi work by that point. His career shifted as he became well-known for more than just casual celebrity sightings. Allan had the privilege of photographing Elton John throughout various stages of the singer’s prolific career.

Reflecting on his extensive work with John, Allan noted a significant evolution in the artist’s approach to performance. “You can see him become more focused,” he remarked. Over the decades, he observed a shift in John’s image and artistry. “I can’t speak for Elton, but I think he became more and more serious as a performer and realised that he’s an all-time great,” Allan stated.

He contrasted John’s flamboyant early days, characterised by vibrant costumes and exuberant performances, with the more contemplative and refined artist he has become. “In the ’70s, he was all about the costumes and the glasses and jumping up and down,” he said.
