In a significant update for users of its email platform, Google has announced that Gmail users can now change their email addresses. The announcement was made by CEO Sundar Pichai in a recent post on the social media platform X. This much-anticipated feature allows users to adopt a more contemporary email address while still retaining access to their existing one.

In his post, Pichai highlighted the necessity of moving away from outdated email handles. “2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn’t need to be stuck in it,” he stated, emphasising that users have the opportunity to move on from their current usernames, which may have been influenced by their interests from years past. Pichai informed users that by navigating to their Google Account settings, they will be able to select a new name as long as it is available. Importantly, users will be able to sign in using both their old and new addresses.
The new capability is being rolled out in stages, which means it may not yet be available to all users immediately. However, Google has indicated that every Gmail user should be able to access this feature in the near future. For those keen to check if the option is available to them, Pichai provided a simple guide. Users can begin by clicking on the circular profile icon located in the top right corner of their Gmail screen, which leads to the “Manage your Google Account” section.

Once in the account management area, users should navigate to “Personal info” from the menu on the left. Following this, they need to select “Email”. Here, upon clicking their current Gmail address, they may be prompted to enter their password, after which an option to change their email address will appear if the feature is currently available for them.

A reassuring aspect of this update is that emails sent to the former email address will still be delivered to the new inbox. Users can seamlessly sign in to Google services—such as Maps, YouTube, and Drive—using either their old or new email addresses. This feature promises to enhance user experience by providing flexibility without the risk of losing important communications.
Furthermore, Google has clarified that users’ data, including emails and photographs, will remain intact during the transition to a new email address. This consideration aims to alleviate concerns regarding the potential loss of important information, which many users may have worried about prior to the update.
It is worth noting, however, that while users can revert back to their previous email address whenever they wish, there are some limitations to the new functionality. Specifically, once a user creates an email address ending in ‘@gmail.com’, they will not be able to create another new Google Account email with the same domain for the subsequent twelve months.
The launch of this new feature reflects Google’s ongoing effort to adapt its services to the needs of its users. By allowing individuals to update their email addresses, the tech giant acknowledges the evolving nature of personal branding and digital identity, offering a solution for those who wish to present a more professional image or simply wish to distance themselves from a username that no longer represents them.
As this feature continues its rollout, Gmail users can look forward to the flexibility of changing their email addresses while maintaining continuity in their communications. This change marks an important evolution in one of the world’s most widely used email services, catering to the diverse needs of its vast user base.
