In an exciting return to the franchise that launched her career, actress Anna Faris has expressed her delight at being invited back by the Wayans brothers for the upcoming sixth installment of the Scary Movie series. Faris described her emotions upon receiving the call from Shawn and Marlon Wayans, stating she was “shocked” but also thrilled to reconnect after more than two decades.
Faris, now 49, candidly revealed her surprise during an interview with PEOPLE, mentioning that it had been since 2002 since she last saw the Wayans siblings. “When they called me, I was shocked and immediately thrilled,” she recalled. The Wayans brothers were instrumental in creating the original Scary Movie in 2000 and its sequel, but they were dismissed prior to Scary Movie 3, which was released in 2003.
Reflecting on this tumultuous history, Faris noted, “I couldn’t believe that there was a world where I would be feeling so good about doing Scary Movies — not just good, like great.” She emphasised the joy of reuniting with the film’s creators, labelling it a “personal celebration” where she could finally express her gratitude for their earlier support in casting her for the role of Cindy Campbell.
Faris recounted the anxieties she faced when first stepping into the role of Cindy, who drew inspiration from iconic horror figures like Sidney Prescott from *Scream* and Julie James from *I Know What You Did Last Summer*. “I was just so scared I was going to be fired because I had no body of work behind me… I didn’t even have an agent,” she explained, highlighting how Scary Movie was her first major acting opportunity.
Following Scary Movie 3, Faris reprised her role in 2006’s Scary Movie 4 but chose not to return for 2013’s fifth film. Regarding her character’s evolution, she remarked, “Cindy steps into her own, and it feels so good. It just feels great.”
Marlon Wayans had previously shared insights into why he and Shawn left the franchise after the second film. In a 2020 discussion with Variety, he revealed that disputes with Miramax Films’ Bob and Harvey Weinstein over contract terms led to their exit. “We probably could have sued or whatever, but part of us was like, ‘All you can do is allow us to create something new,’” Marlon explained, hinting at the challenging circumstances surrounding their departure.
