A gifted young athlete, 17-year-old Dylan Sougstad, tragically lost his life in a head-on collision in Ohio on the night of March 13. The incident involved two vehicles on State Route 741, where a Tesla Model 3 reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a GMC Terrain. Officials from the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that Dylan, a resident of Cincinnati and a junior at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, was returning home from his first spring club soccer match when the accident occurred. His passing has left a significant void, with the school community expressing their grief alongside his family. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic passing of CHCA student, Dylan Sougstad,” read a heartfelt statement from the academy. The school indicated they would lean on their faith for comfort during this difficult time.

Lori Taylor, Dylan’s mother, has expressed the family’s desire for more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash. She is hopeful that any witnesses will step forward to assist in piecing together the events leading to this catastrophe. “It would be just so great if we didn’t have to wait as long as we’re going to for the information that we’re eventually going to get,” she said, reflecting the anguish of waiting for clarity.

Described fondly by loved ones, Dylan was known as “Dilly-Wop” and “Dill Pickle.” His obituary highlighted his radiant personality, character, and unyielding spirit. He was hailed as “a beacon of energy and love who touched countless lives.” The family noted his artistic talents and dedication to his faith, stating that these attributes played a fundamental role in his identity.
Dylan’s father, Steve Sougstad, shared his amazement at the outpouring of love from the community, recounting numerous stories from friends about how Dylan supported them throughout their lives. “As a father of a teenage boy, you’re always worried that they’re just out there running around, doing stupid stuff when they learn how to drive, and he wasn’t. He was a good kid,” he reflected.
To honour Dylan’s legacy, the family has initiated The Dylan Sougstad Memorial Fund with an ambitious goal of raising £15,000 to establish the LUCA Legacy Scholarship. This scholarship, designed to recognise and reward a student who embodies the core values of love, unity, compassion, and authenticity, diverges from traditional academic or athletic awards. “This scholarship is not about academic merit or athletic prowess. It’s about character,” the obituary stressed, underscoring the essence of Dylan’s values that will continue to inspire others.
In addition to this scholarship initiative, a GoFundMe campaign has been organised to support Dylan’s family during this difficult period. As of March 31, over £12,000 has been raised to assist with unforeseen expenses, including funeral costs. The community’s response highlights the incredible impact Dylan had on those around him, as many rally to ease the burdens faced by his grieving family.
Although Dylan’s life was tragically cut short, his influence and spirit will remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Friends, family, and community members are committed to celebrating his legacy, ensuring his values of love and kindness continue to resonate and inspire beyond his years.
