A Kentucky man who gained notoriety after winning a substantial lottery prize last year has found himself in legal turmoil again. James Farthing, 51, was arrested over the weekend in connection with a burglary incident in Lexington. Authorities allege that Farthing unlawfully entered a residence, making off with $12,000 in cash.

The arrest took place on Saturday evening, March 28. According to an arrest citation obtained by various local news outlets, the incident was reported by a resident who claimed to have seen Farthing on her security camera. The woman described hearing a loud noise, likened to the sound of her door being forcibly opened. Following the noise, she discovered that a significant amount of cash was missing from her home.

This incident marks a troubling continuation of Farthing’s legal issues since he won the Powerball lottery jackpot in April 2025. His win was a staggering £167 million, making him one of the wealthiest residents in Kentucky. However, less than a year later, Farthing’s fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the worse.
Farthing’s current arrest is notably his third in under a year. Prior to this weekend’s incident, he was involved in a hit-and-run incident in November. During that event, he faced charges of wanton endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident after colliding with another vehicle and failing to assist the other party involved.
In February, Farthing encountered more legal trouble, this time in Scott County, where he faced charges for allegedly intimidating a participant in a legal proceeding. These incidents have collectively raised serious concerns about his behaviour following his lottery win, which has led many to speculate about the impact of sudden wealth on his lifestyle choices.
In a separate incident weeks prior to his recent arrest, Farthing pleaded guilty to assaulting an officer in Pinellas County, Florida. Bodycam footage from the incident showed him kicking the officer in the face while at a bar. Following the guilty plea, he was set to appear in court in April for this case as well.
Farthing is now awaiting arraignments for multiple charges in addition to the latest burglary accusations. As of now, no further details regarding the specific charges for these upcoming court appearances have been confirmed. Information regarding any legal representation he may have remains unverified.
To further complicate matters, a £10,000 bond was posted for Farthing’s release on Sunday, the day following his arrest. His court appearance for the alleged burglary is scheduled for the afternoon of the coming Monday, creating further anticipation for developments in this case.
As the situation unfolds, it raises questions about the consequences of sudden wealth and the challenges faced by lottery winners. The stark contrast between his windfall and current legal problems serves as a cautionary tale for others celebrating unexpected financial gains.
In light of these ongoing legal challenges, many are keeping a close eye on Farthing’s case. With developments occurring rapidly, his story continues to captivate local media and the public alike.
