Camila was hospitalised on 8 March after presenting with a range of troubling symptoms, including a cough, fever, fatigue, and a diminished appetite. Initially treated for a viral infection, further investigation revealed the shocking discovery that she had swallowed a button battery. This alarming diagnosis highlights the potential hazards posed by the small, disc-shaped batteries, which are commonly used in everyday devices such as watches, remote controls, and children’s toys.

Her mother, Cassandra Tafolla, 24, shared her shock upon learning about the button battery. “I didn’t know what a button battery was,” she explained, admitting that she was unaware that some household items included them. Camila’s father, Hugo Romero, 33, acknowledged being familiar with button batteries but mentioned that they had never encountered a product in their home that required one.

In their quest to raise awareness about this issue, the couple is urging other parents to carefully monitor the toys and items their children have access to. Tafolla emphasised the importance of checking that toys are securely closed before allowing children to play with them, warning, “Please double-check your children’s toys.”
Statistics indicate that button battery ingestion is a serious public health concern. In the United States alone, over 3,500 incidents occur each year, affecting both children and adults. Data from the National Capital Poison Center reveals that from 1985 to 2019, there were 33 fatalities linked to button battery ingestion.
Camila’s distress was evident before she received treatment. Her mother recounted how the young girl complained of feeling hot, saying, “She was telling me her throat burned. She was telling me that she couldn’t breathe.” Dr. Harman Chawla, the medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, provided crucial insights into the medical implications of such a battery being swallowed. He noted that Camila developed a lung infection that progressed rapidly after ingestion.
The danger posed by button batteries is particularly significant due to the chemical reactions they can trigger upon contact with saliva. These lithium batteries can generate an electric current that leads to severe burns of the oesophagus in just a matter of hours. Dr. Chawla explained that such interactions can result in extensive damage to surrounding tissues, including blood vessels.
Following the discovery of the swallowed battery, Camila underwent surgery to have it removed but remains in the paediatric intensive care unit. She is still considered critically ill due to complications stemming from a respiratory infection linked to her condition. Tafolla revealed the severity of the damage, stating that the battery had burned a hole “really close” to the point where the lungs separate, with only a narrow gap of about an eighth of an inch between the injuries.
Dr. Chawla has expressed cautious optimism about Camila’s recovery, stating that while there is a long healing process ahead, they are hopeful for her eventual improvement. “We’re optimistic that we’re going to be able to get her through this,” he stated, underscoring the critical nature of timely medical intervention.
