The incident unfolded in Veazie near mile marker 189. According to reports from the Maine State Police, Thibodeau noticed an 18-year-old girl who had lost control of her car and veered off the road due to the snowy weather. He stopped his vehicle to offer assistance as he and his wife were returning home from a vacation.

Both Thibodeau and the teenager were outside their vehicles when a passing car, driven by a 19-year-old woman from Old Town, lost control and struck them. The impact forced them down an embankment, leading to severe injuries for Thibodeau. It is believed that he may have attempted to protect the young girl at the time of the collision.
Following the accident, Thibodeau was rushed to the hospital where he was reported to have sustained “severe, life-threatening injuries.” Family members have indicated through a GoFundMe page that he is currently intubated and sedated, having undergone multiple surgeries in a bid to recover. His condition remains critical, requiring ongoing medical attention.
Paige Higgins, Thibodeau’s daughter, has described her father as one of the most generous individuals she knows, stating on CBS affiliate WABI that he would readily help anyone in need. “It highlights how selfless he is. He would do anything for anyone,” she said, reflecting on her father’s natural inclination to help others.
The teenage girl Thibodeau was aiding has expressed deep gratitude towards him, suggesting that his actions were pivotal to her survival. She likened him to Superman for his bravery and selflessness during the turmoil. Her minor injuries are a stark contrast to the serious condition of Thibodeau, who remains in the hospital.
As of mid-afternoon on 27 March, the GoFundMe campaign launched in Thibodeau’s honour has raised over £48,000. This financial support is vital for covering his medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and for providing assistance to his family during this challenging time. The family expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming support and donations received so far.
“With the current emotional burden placed upon us, we are also confronted with the significant financial implications of critical care and ongoing treatments,” the family stated in their message. They are focused on being present for Thibodeau as he battles through this critical phase of recovery.
State police have confirmed that speed is not considered a contributing factor in the accident, and an investigation into the details surrounding the crash is actively underway. The community and beyond are rallying around Thibodeau and his family during this immensely difficult period, highlighting the impact his selfless and heroic act has had on the lives of those involved.
As Scott Thibodeau continues to fight for his life, the stories of kindness and bravery stemming from this incident serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion in times of crisis.
