In an unexpected turn of events, a Los Angeles-based content creator has turned a piece of discarded Oscars red carpet into a striking addition to her home decor. Paige Thalia, who recently moved back to Los Angeles after a lengthy trip across Europe in a camper van, embarked on a quest for an affordable rug, but ended up with a slice of Hollywood history instead.

Prior to the prestigious awards show, Thalia had noticed the installation of lavish red carpets at the Dolby Theatre. Although she had previously kept a small piece of carpet from a post-Oscars event nearly a decade ago, she hoped to find another scrap once the celebration concluded. She imagined locating a crew member to pass on a piece to her the following day, but upon her arrival, she found that the carpet had already been collected.

What began as a simple search quickly transformed into an enthusiastic scavenger hunt through Hollywood’s post-award show landscape. With a hopeful heart, Thalia ventured towards a nearby parking lot behind the El Capitan Theatre, where she believed equipment from the event might be stored. Much to her surprise, she stumbled upon a recycling bin filled with rolls of the vibrant red carpet.
“I just couldn’t believe my eyes,” Thalia remarked. “It felt surreal, like I’d discovered a hidden gem from awards season.” Without a moment’s hesitation, she retrieved a manageable length of the carpet, thrilled at having finally found the perfect rug for her apartment.
Once Thalia shared her experience on TikTok, it gained viral attention. Through the responses, she discovered that the Academy often recycles the red carpet after the show. According to reports she had gathered, approximately 95 per cent of the material is returned to the manufacturer for repurposing, while the remaining portion is either reused or locally distributed. To her delight, Thalia realised that about one per cent of the iconic carpet now resides in her living room.
The vibrant piece of Hollywood lore has since found a comfortable position in her music corner, where she creates and enjoys her vinyl records. Although it fit surprisingly well in the designated space, she plans to trim the edges and is currently searching for a professional carpet handler in Los Angeles to ensure it is properly finished and maintained.
Thalia expressed her excitement, stating, “I want to turn it into a long-lasting rug that blends my style with a touch of Hollywood glamour.” The red carpet has now transformed from something discarded into the focal point of her music area, which she had been curating for some time.
The attention her unique find has received has been overwhelming and entertaining for the content creator. “It’s been a hilarious week,” she shared, recounting her unexpected appearances on news stations across the country and receiving messages from friends who have spotted coverage abroad. The media visibility has brought a range of unexpected opportunities, including interest from brands and even a request from a documentary photographer wanting a piece of the famous carpet.
In reflecting on her experience, Thalia sees the journey as a profound full-circle moment. She acknowledges the serendipity of discovering a perfect home addition in such an unpredictable manner. Although what started as a personal quest for an affordable rug led her to an unusual find, it has filled her apartment with a story that beautifully intertwines her artistic pursuits with a slice of cinematic history.
With a newfound appreciation for the quirky, personalised elements in her home, Thalia encourages others to embrace serendipity in their journeys, reminding us that sometimes the most extraordinary treasures are the ones we stumble upon when least expected.
