The dog’s condition was alarming; covered in dirty and tangled fur, it looked quite different from the well-groomed pet Kelly remembered. Nevertheless, her granddaughter felt a connection and suggested that the matted dog resembled Saleo, a sentiment that Kelly quickly agreed with upon seeing the photo.
“I said, ‘Well, if that crown underneath that ponytail is there, I said that is Saleo,” Kelly told reporters, recognising a distinct white marking on the dog’s face that matched her own pet.
The very next day, filled with hope and excitement, Kelly visited the Mahoning County Dog Warden to learn more about the found dog. Armed with old veterinary records and cherished photographs of Saleo, she was able to positively identify her long-lost friend. Emotion overwhelmed her during the moment of recognition. “The tears, I couldn’t hold them back,” she recalled, reflecting on the powerful emotions of finally being reunited.
On March 23, the Mahoning County Dog Warden celebrated the reunion by sharing a photo of the touching moment on social media. The agency highlighted the importance of the occasion, stating, “This is the little guy who was found near Fellows Riverside Gardens this weekend. His owner has been looking for him since 2017. We had him groomed today, and he went home! This was a great way to start the week!”
