**Rathlin Island’s Successful Ferret Eradication Boosts Native Seabird Populations**

In a significant conservation achievement, Rathlin Island, located off the coast of Northern Ireland, has successfully eliminated its feral ferret population. This milestone marks the first time in two decades that native seabirds, particularly the Manx shearwater, have returned to nest on the island. The eradication effort, part of a larger initiative called the Life Raft project, aimed to protect local seabird colonies and enhance their breeding success.

According to a recent announcement by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Northern Ireland, the removal of ferrets from Rathlin Island will significantly benefit the region’s diverse seabird population. The introduction of ferrets in the 1980s led to a dramatic decline in seabird numbers, as these predators feasted on eggs, chicks, and even adult birds. The well-planned eradication took several years and involved various innovative methods, including the use of thermal drones, and the assistance of a specially trained detection dog named Woody.
Joanne Sherwood, director of RSPB Northern Ireland, hailed the success of the project as a pivotal moment for both the island and global conservation efforts. Michael Rafferty, the eradication manager for the Life Raft initiative, expressed pride in the community’s role throughout the project. He praised the collaboration that allowed for the creation of a safer nesting environment for seabirds on Rathlin. “It’s a brilliant red letter day for Rathlin Island, and for the community who have been amazing to work with,” he remarked, highlighting the contributions of dedicated experts and local residents.
Encouraging signs of recovery are already evident, with the Manx shearwater making its long-awaited return to Rathlin for nesting. Once a common sight on the island, these seabirds had not been seen there for 20 years. This resurgence serves as a hopeful indicator of what further success may be achieved in the coming years.

Marina McMullan, chair of the Rathlin Development & Community Association, noted that residents can now safely raise domestic poultry, a long-term aspiration previously jeopardised by the ferrets’ presence.
