Former professional basketball player Charles Barkley, now 63, has recently expressed his views on the contentious subject of spanking children, arguing that it can serve as a legitimate form of discipline. During an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” the ex-NBA star emphasised that while he does not condone child abuse, he believes in the importance of disciplinary measures, including spanking.

Barkley, who is the father to an adult daughter, Christiana, with his wife Maureen Blumhardt, stated his perspective candidly. “I believe in discipline. I’m not going around telling people to beat their kids,” he noted, adding that a lack of discipline could lead to behavioural issues among children. He remarked, “If you don’t spank your kids and discipline them, they turn into some of these brats that we got today.”
While acknowledging that his views might stir controversy, Barkley remains unphased by potential backlash. He openly told the audience, “You can blast me on social media. You guys know I don’t do social media. I don’t ever read any comments. I don’t care what y’all think.” He further asserted that he would continue to express his opinions freely, regardless of public reaction.
Barkley’s comments come amidst a broader societal debate surrounding the appropriateness of physical discipline. Research, including statements from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has increasingly warned against corporal punishment. A 2019 policy update from the AAP indicated a strong correlation between spanking and negative outcomes for children, advocating for alternative discipline methods.
The AAP’s advisory, which followed two decades after prior guidance on effective discipline, urged parents to avoid corporal punishment altogether. It emphasised that spanking can heighten the risk of injury in young children, potentially leading to long-term mental health issues. The AAP indicated that physical punishment often fosters conflict-ridden relationships between parents and children and may create patterns of aggression.
Dr. Robert D. Sege, a paediatrician and co-author of the AAP’s policy statement, highlighted that the essence of discipline should be teaching children appropriate behaviours while supporting their development. He stated, “Effective discipline does so without the use of corporal punishment or verbal shaming.” Furthermore, research indicates that children who are subjected to corporal punishment exhibit a rise in aggressive behaviour and face a heightened risk of mental health disorders.
The AAP also provided parents with alternative strategies for managing behaviour. Rather than resorting to physical punishment, they advocate for positive reinforcement—offering attention and praise when children display desirable behaviours and withdrawing attention when misbehaving.
Barkley, however, maintains his position firmly. The outspoken former athlete contends that traditional forms of discipline, including spanking, play a role in ensuring proper child upbringing. He claimed that some individuals may appreciate his perspective, while others would not, yet he asserts that they will ultimately adapt to differing opinions.
Over the years, the discourse surrounding parenting styles and methods of discipline has become increasingly polarised, with many advocating for more progressive, non-violent approaches. The debate continues to evoke strong feelings on both sides, with staunch supporters of corporal punishment often clashing with those who promote alternative methods.
As Charles Barkley articulates his views in the public forum, the conversation on the appropriateness of spanking as a disciplinary tool is likely to persist, drawing in various voices from parents, educators, and experts around the globe. As this dialogue evolves, discussions on the impact of different disciplinary techniques on child development remain vital as society seeks to foster healthier relationships between parents and their children.
