A contemporary pilot believes he has made a significant breakthrough in solving the mystery surrounding the disappearance of famed aviator Amelia Earhart. Nearly 90 years after Earhart vanished during her quest to become the first woman to fly around the world, Justin Myers has been investigating the possibility that her aircraft may be located near Nikumaroro Island, situated in the South Pacific Ocean.

Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared on July 2, 1937, while flying in a Lockheed 10-E Electra aircraft. The disappearance has been the subject of extensive speculation and investigation over the decades. Myers’ curiosity was piqued after viewing a National Geographic documentary detailing the notable aviator’s last flight. Following this, he decided to utilise Google Earth to search for potential wreckage of the aircraft.
Myers, drawing on his own experiences as a pilot, considered where he would potentially have attempted an emergency landing if caught in Earhart’s position, low on fuel and lost. He remarked, “I was just putting myself in Amelia and Fred’s shoes,” indicating his intent to apply practical flying knowledge to the historical scenario.

The investigation is further backed by archaeologist Dr. Richard Pettigrew, who believes that Earhart may have intended to land on the northwestern reef flat of Nikumaroro before her plane succumbed to the sea. “There’s such a huge amount of evidence that I believe we’re on the right track,” Pettigrew stated during an interview on a television programme. He emphasised the importance of scientific methods in continuing the search for clues that might lead to a definitive conclusion regarding Earhart’s fate.
During his exploration on Google Earth, Myers identified what appeared to be a promising area where the aircraft might be buried under layered sediment. He observed a sandy section stretching over 50 feet long, alongside what he described as a “dark-coloured, perfectly straight object”. He speculated that it might resemble a section of an aircraft fuselage, a theory further strengthened by measurements that aligned closely with those of Earhart’s Lockheed model.
In his March 15 blog post, Myers described the findings, pointing out features that might correspond to those of a downed plane. Among them were what he believed to be elements of a Radian engine and parts of a wheel. “I was struggling to see this as anything other than the debris of a lost vintage aircraft that has been hidden away for years,” he remarked, expressing his conviction about the possibility of unearthing long-lost remains.
While Myers’ digital search is far from conclusive, he has taken the initiative to file an official report with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s air crash investigation team. His findings, though preliminary, have added a new layer of intrigue to the ongoing efforts to locate the aircraft.
Despite his cautious optimism, Myers clarified that attributing the discovered objects directly to Earhart’s plane would indeed be premature. He stated, “It would be very bold of me to say the objects in these Google Earth images are the remains of Amelia Earhart’s Electra 10E. All I am saying is that these objects look like unfound plane wreckage, which strangely looks and measures the same as her aircraft.”
As search efforts continue, both amateur and professional investigators remain captivated by Earhart’s story and the unanswered questions surrounding her fate. If Myers’ findings undergo further examination and validation, they could potentially mark a monumental step in finally resolving a mystery that has captivated historians and aviation enthusiasts for decades.
