Cause of Death Revealed for L.A. Mayoral Candidate’s Daughter, 22, After He Ended Campaign Over ‘Unimaginable Loss’

The tragic death of Emily Beutner, the daughter of former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Austin Beutner, has been officially classified as a suicide. The announcement, made on 20 March, comes over two months after the 21-year-old was found unresponsive on 6 January.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner revealed that Emily’s passing resulted from the combined effects of multiple substances. According to the release, she had ingested mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, and prescription medications quetiapine and mirtazapine. Mirtazapine is commonly prescribed for depression, while quetiapine is used to treat conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as noted by MedLine Plus.

Emily’s death initially drew significant attention when it was investigated as a homicide. Reports indicated that she was discovered by authorities after appearing to suffer a medical emergency along a Palmdale highway shortly after midnight. After being treated at the scene, she was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.

The investigation into her death began with homicide investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) taking charge. However, Lieutenant Michael Modica, who was involved in the case, cautioned that the classification should not lead to premature conclusions regarding the cause of death, stating that such procedures are standard for young individuals found in similar predicaments.

On 30 January, Austin Beutner expressed his profound grief in a statement through local media, saying, “My family has experienced the unimaginable loss of our beloved daughter.” He requested privacy and prayers from the public during this incredibly difficult time. Days later, on 5 February, Beutner suspended his mayoral campaign, stating, “Family has always come first for me. That is where I need to be at this time.”

In his deeply personal announcement, he described Emily as “a magical person” and the “light of our lives”. He emphasised the commitment required in a successful campaign and the mayoral role, underlining the importance of surrounding oneself with loved ones during difficult times.

Emily Beutner was studying studio arts at Loyola Marymount University, where she was described as a promising student and valued member of the community. Following her death, university president Thomas Poon shared condolences and announced plans to commemorate Emily with a plaque at the LMU student memorial, inviting the community to remember her impact and hold her loved ones in their thoughts.

Emily Beutner is one of four adult children of Austin and his wife, Virginia. The family’s heart-wrenching loss has brought forward discussions about mental health and substance use challenges, highlighting the importance of seeking help during difficult times.
