A Texas teenager has undergone life-altering surgeries following severe complications from the flu, leading to the amputation of both her legs and one arm. Kaydin Ruiz, a 13-year-old from Kerrville, Texas, first exhibited flu symptoms on 23 January, causing concern for her mother, Amanda Valdez.

Initially, Kaydin displayed classic flu signs, including fever, chills, and body aches. Amanda recounted that they sought medical help at an emergency room towards the end of January, where Kaydin received oxygen and fluids. Despite the medical team considering a transfer to a hospital in San Antonio for more intensive care, they ultimately decided to send Kaydin home with instructions to stay hydrated.
However, her condition worsened dramatically after returning home. Valdez shared that Kaydin was soon in critical condition, requiring urgent medical attention in San Antonio where she was placed on a ventilator due to significant respiratory distress. At this point, assessments revealed that her heart was functioning at only 20% capacity, and she was facing multiple health challenges.
The dire situation escalated as Kaydin battled severe bacterial infections, including streptococcus pneumonia, leading to septic shock and multi-organ failure. Dr. Howard Pryor, a paediatric surgeon at Texas Children’s Hospital, warned about the dangers of Influenza B, noting that the virus can provoke severe reactions in some individuals.
The medical complications Kaydin experienced resulted in inappropriate blood clotting, prompting Doctors to take the drastic step of amputating her legs and one arm on 17 March. Amanda Valdez expressed her heartbreak over the situation, acknowledging the immense challenge of explaining the profound changes to her daughter’s life. “It’s devastating. How do you tell your child that their whole world has changed?” she lamented, noting that Kaydin is now left with significant scars—both physical and emotional.
In response to the family’s plight, friends have initiated a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising funds to support Kaydin’s long recovery process. The fundraiser emphasises the serious risks associated with the flu, urging others to be vigilant about the potential for illness to escalate quickly. The campaign highlights how swiftly complications can arise, explaining that severe pneumonia can become fatal within hours and that septic shock can develop almost instantly.
Valdez has expressed a strong desire to raise awareness about the potential dangers of the flu, stating, “We just want to share her story and help other people before it gets to this. Never in a million years did we expect this from the flu.” The family hopes that by sharing their experience, they can encourage others to take flu symptoms seriously and seek immediate medical care when needed.
