A heartfelt graduation moment shared between a mother and her son has captured the attention of many after a video showed the two experiencing significant milestones simultaneously. Lucky Asker, a 26-year-old from Ohio, celebrated her degree from Ohio State University while her 11-month-old son, Idrees, took his first steps during a poignant photo shoot.

This special occasion marked a significant transition for both Lucky, who graduated with a specialisation in Public Health and Sociology, and her son, who achieved a crucial developmental milestone. The idea to include Idrees in the photo shoot came naturally to Lucky, who welcomed her son just before the final term of her studies. It was important for her to capture the moment alongside her child as they both embarked on their new journeys.

During the shoot, photographer Brenna Marie documented the emotional moment when Idrees stumbled forward as Lucky was adjusting her graduation cap. “It felt completely unreal,” Lucky recalled. “For a second, I didn’t even process what was happening. I was just watching him like, ‘Wait… is this really it?’ All the little moments flashed through my mind,” she recounted, reflecting on how much her son had grown since his birth.

In an interview, Lucky described the intertwining of their milestones as deeply meaningful. She felt as though they were both transitioning into new phases of their lives. “It felt like two milestones happening at the same time. I was closing one chapter by graduating, and my son was starting another by taking his first steps,” she stated, emphasising the profound connection of growth she felt they both shared.

This memorable event also encapsulated the challenges Lucky overcame on her path to graduation. Balancing motherhood, studies, and an internship, she faced significant hurdles, including severe postpartum health issues. After an arduous labour that resulted in a C-section, Lucky found herself readmitted due to postpartum preeclampsia shortly after giving birth. She candidly shared that this period of vulnerability was compounded by the struggles of recovery and motherhood.

Despite these challenges, she found purpose in her experiences. “There were long days and moments when I felt overwhelmed, but it gave me so much motivation,” Lucky reflected. “I made it a point to complete as much work as possible before returning home to be with my son, so I could be fully present with him during our time together,” she added. It was a trying time, yet one that ultimately proved meaningful for her journey as both a mother and a student.

Idrees became Lucky’s primary motivation in her academic pursuits. On particularly exhausting days, she would remind herself of her aspirations and the future she envisioned for them both. As a first-generation immigrant, she felt a strong responsibility to pave the way for a better life for her son. “I wanted to show him what it looks like to keep going, even when things are hard,” she explained, acknowledging the deeper significance behind her efforts.

Throughout her challenges, Lucky was supported by her partner, Charles Cartwright, and her family, particularly her sisters, who provided substantial help along the way. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my support system,” she noted, emphasising the importance of community in her journey.

Reflecting on her own experience, she mentioned that she even had to split her semester to manage her responsibilities better, which ultimately allowed her to celebrate the significant moment captured in the video.
