A 23-year-old man from Oregon has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the tragic killing of his wife, Oulaykham Mona Chopheng. The incident occurred earlier this year and has drawn significant media attention due to the circumstances surrounding the case.

Talon Gabriel Mitchell, who pled guilty to charges of first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon, was sentenced on 10 March 2023. According to a press release from the Beaverton Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check at an apartment complex located in the 1000 block of Southwest 160th Avenue on 23 February 2023 after receiving a distressing text message from Mitchell.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Jeff MacLean remarked on the perplexing nature of Mitchell’s communication, stating that it conveyed a sense of confusion and desperation. The message included phrases that indicated he was in a disoriented mental state and in need of assistance, with statements like, “Help, HELP, IM STUCK IN A DREAM, INSANITY, HELP ME.”
Police were present outside Mitchell’s residence for approximately 40 minutes before gaining entry due to concerns for his safety after they could hear noises coming from inside the apartment. Upon entering, they discovered Chopheng fatally injured. Reports confirm she had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was found on a couch, a grim and tragic scene for the responding officers.
Mitchell, who was only 19 years old at the time of the incident, later informed investigators that he had taken LSD on the day of the killing, which he believed led him to blackout. When he became conscious again, he recounted waking up near the front door, oblivious to the horrific event that had transpired. He reportedly described having experienced altered perceptions, including a belief that Chopheng resembled a “zombie,” a notion he claimed was influenced by a recent media story concerning a skin infection in Philadelphia.
This case has highlighted the dangers associated with substance abuse and access to firearms, prompting community discussions about mental health and weapon safety. Jeff MacLean expressed dismay at the situation, commenting, “It’s obviously a very sad circumstance. This is a very beautiful young woman whose life was taken way too soon by just this reckless conduct.”
The case took a further turn when Mitchell acknowledged owning both a handgun and a shotgun, the latter of which was identified as the weapon used in his wife’s death. Following his arrest the day after the incident on 24 February, legal proceedings unfolded rapidly, culminating in his guilty plea just a few weeks later.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Mitchell to pay $23,000 in restitution to the family of Chopheng. This financial obligation is an attempt to compensate the victim’s family, although no amount can truly alleviate the pain of loss.
