The vibrant cover of *The Legend of Mrs. Claws* has recently been unveiled, showcasing illustrations by Anémone Durhin. The book is scheduled for publication on 29 September and will be brought out by Union Square Kids, an imprint under Hachette Book Group. This whimsical tale centres around Mrs. Claws, a cat residing on the titular Scary Street, where readers first encountered her in Bass’s Halloween-themed story.

In a delightful twist, Mrs. Claws, while attempting to embody the essence of a fearsome character, struggles to live up to expectations. Her journey takes an unexpected turn one chilly evening when she inadvertently boards Santa Claus’s sleigh, leading her into an enchanting holiday adventure. The narrative aims to appeal to children aged between four and eight, offering a fresh take on the festive season that could become a new tradition for families.
Bass, now 46, shared insights into the story’s inspiration, expressing that he has always enjoyed the concept of misfit characters coexisting within magical worlds. Reflecting on his experience during the creation of *Trick or Treat on Scary Street*, he noted that a particular black cat character piqued his interest. This “scrappy, determined” cat endeavoured to appear scarier than she naturally was, igniting Bass’s imagination about her life beyond Halloween festivities.
“My children are also passionate about cats,” Bass revealed to *PEOPLE*. “That little character quickly became a favourite in our household.” This love for his feline character spurred Bass to envision what might unfold for her post-Halloween, ultimately giving birth to *The Legend of Mrs. Claws*.
The notion of celebrating the holiday spirit through literature has become an emerging tradition for Bass. He previously expressed how the exploration of Halloween in *Trick or Treat on Scary Street* offered its own unique adventure filled with discoveries and excitement. Yet, he hopes his latest book conveys a deeper message beyond seasonal merriment.
“She’s a character who doesn’t quite conform to the norms, and I think that many of us can relate to that,” Bass explains. “It serves as a reminder that the attributes that make us different or the moments we misinterpret can guide us to exactly where we belong.”
*The Legend of Mrs. Claws* is now available for pre-order wherever books are sold. Bass’s endeavours in the realm of children’s literature are a testament to his creativity and ability to connect with young audiences, merging the themes of self-acceptance and festive fun in a charming narrative.
This new addition to his portfolio signals Bass’s commitment to nurturing a love for reading among young ones, as he invites families to bond over stories that resonate with both holiday cheer and life lessons. With the advent of autumn approaching, parents and children alike may find themselves enchanted by the engaging adventures of Mrs. Claws alongside the beloved characters from Scary Street.
As excitement builds for the release of *The Legend of Mrs. Claws*, it not only offers an exciting story for children but also a meaningful message for all ages. Fans of Bass, as well as new readers, will have the opportunity to enjoy this delightful tale just in time for the festive season.
