On March 17, they announced that the unidentified remains of a man discovered in Blount County in 1981 have been positively identified as belonging to William Thomas Green. The skeletal remains were uncovered on April 4, 1981, by hunters in the East Miller’s Cove area. Forensic experts at the time estimated the deceased individual was a white male aged between 20 and 35 years, but a lack of identification meant he was classified as a John Doe. In 2007, a breakthrough occurred when the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center provided a sample of the remains to the University of Texas Center for Human Identification. This move allowed for the establishment of a DNA profile, which was entered into both the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). Unfortunately, these efforts yielded no matches.

In March 2025, TBI agents, alongside the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, resumed collaboration on the case. They submitted another sample from the remains to Othram, a forensic DNA laboratory based in Texas. Remarkably, scientists were able to extract useful DNA from the skeletal remains, then constructed a comprehensive profile of the unidentified man.

This new profile provided vital leads that directed investigators to potential family members of the victim. By collecting reference DNA samples from relatives, a successful match was eventually made, confirming that the remains belonged to William Thomas Green, who was born on March 29, 1942. Reports indicate that Green was last seen by family members in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1977.
