Numerous cream cheese products from Made Fresh Salads have been recalled due to health concerns regarding potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium known to cause serious infections. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning indicating that these products could result in “serious adverse health consequences or death,” particularly for vulnerable populations.

The recall was first announced on 20 February 2023 and was subsequently escalated to a Class I recall on 11 March. This classification indicates a significant risk, stating there is a “reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” Reports cite that the decision to enhance the recall status was guided by findings from FDA enforcement notices.
Affected items are packaged in 5 lb. white plastic tubs displaying the Made Fresh Salads label. These products were distributed across various areas, including Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and other parts of New York City, primarily through retail stores and distributors.

The range of cream cheese flavours included in the recall is extensive and features items such as Apple Cinnamon, Caramel, Blueberry, Garlic & Herb, Jalapeño, and several others. The flavours also include Tofu Whipped and Walnut Raisin Cream Cheese, all of which have expiration dates extending to 27 February 2023.
The contamination was discovered through routine testing, which revealed that a component of the mixer used during production was contaminated with listeria. Following these findings, Made Fresh Salads took immediate action by ceasing the use of the affected mixer and ensuring it was removed from their production line.
While there have been no reported illnesses linked to the consumption of these products at this time, the FDA is urging consumers who have purchased the implicated cream cheese to return them to the point of sale for a full refund. This precaution is essential to mitigate any potential health risks.
Listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria infection, can manifest in various symptoms, including headaches, fever, muscle aches, confusion, and diarrhoea, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The agency particularly warns that specific demographics, such as older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are particularly susceptible to severe outcomes from listeriosis.
As the situation develops, Made Fresh Salads is likely to face scrutiny regarding its food safety practices. The FDA continues to monitor the situation as part of its efforts to ensure the safety of food products available to consumers.
In light of this incident, it is imperative for shoppers to stay informed about food recalls and to exercise caution when purchasing perishable items. This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the potential risks associated with contaminated products. Consumers are advised to follow updates from health authorities and to report any adverse symptoms if they suspect they have consumed contaminated products.
