9-Week-Old Kitten Dies After Saving Sleeping Owner from House Fire in Oregon: ‘He Almost Made It Out’

A Tillamook resident owes his life to the quick actions of his cat during a devastating house fire in the early hours of February 21. Donald VanWormer, 56, was sound asleep in his home when his pet cat, Fred, came to his rescue, alerting him to the danger.

VanWormer recounted the harrowing experience, stating that Fred “jumped on my face and started hitting me with his paws.” The feline was in a frantic state, prompting VanWormer to wake up to the smell of smoke permeating the air. Realising the gravity of the situation, he quickly began searching for a way out of the house.

In his desperate attempt to flee the advancing flames, VanWormer grabbed Fred but soon found his exit blocked by a dresser and a thick cloud of smoke. He managed to make it to the living room just as the ceiling began to cave in. “I was stumbling but finally got out the door,” he recalled. However, once outside, he discovered that Fred was no longer in his arms.

Frantically, he attempted to rush back into the burning house to find Fred but fell, hitting his head during the fall. “When I came to, I tried to get back inside to find him, but the firefighters stopped me,” he lamented. He pleaded with the emergency responders for help, desperate to reunite with his beloved pet.

Tragically, after the fire was extinguished, firefighters found Fred’s body inside the doorway. VanWormer expressed his sorrow, saying, “He almost made it out. Fred died saving me.” It was later revealed that Fred was only a 9-week-old kitten at the time of the incident.
