Giahan Tang, a 24-year-old from South Philadelphia, has recently opened up about her surprising cancer diagnosis and recovery, sharing her experiences on TikTok to raise awareness and inspire others. Her story illustrates the importance of listening to one’s body and prioritising health.

After graduating from Temple University in 2023, Tang believed she was finally establishing a stable life. The young woman worked at a fine-dining steakhouse, progressing from a hostess to a server in just two years. In her pursuit of personal growth, she committed to healthier eating and frequent gym visits, feeling more vigorous and resilient as she approached what she envisioned would be a year of self-development in 2025.
However, this optimistic phase of her life quickly took a dramatic turn. Tang began experiencing an array of peculiar symptoms, which she initially dismissed as minor health issues. “I thought I had food poisoning twice,” she recounted, explaining symptoms that included vomiting, fatigue, and fever. With her history of good health, she assumed these ailments were temporary and would subside.
The turning point came one night when Tang experienced excruciating abdominal pain that left her unable to find relief. After a visit to urgent care, she was sent to the emergency room for further evaluation. After several hours, doctors assured her the initial tests indicated only an ovarian cyst, which she found comforting, especially after hearing similar stories from colleagues. However, her relief was short-lived.
A few days later, Tang received a call from Penn Medicine regarding the results of a CT scan that had revealed troubling small lesions on her abdominal wall, suggesting metastatic disease. “My heart dropped,” she recalled, the gravity of these findings not fully sinking in at that moment.
As the days passed and further tests were conducted, Tang began to reflect on her prior symptoms—the fevers, fatigue, and intense itching she had attributed to eczema. Her intuition had been signalling that something was amiss. Two weeks later, her worst fears were confirmed when she learned through a biopsy that she had stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a high-risk type of blood cancer. Faced with the devastating diagnosis, she felt overwhelmed and fearful about how to inform her family.
Sharing the news with her family was daunting. “I worried more about how to tell my family and friends than about whether I was going to survive,” Tang shared. When she finally gathered the strength to break the news, her mother exhibited remarkable composure, asking insightful questions about Tang’s treatment plan.
With encouragement from her oncologist, Tang channelled her anxiety into research, learning everything she could about her condition. She realised that the aggressive nature of her cancer warranted immediate attention. Her treatment began with an intensive regimen of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and steroids administered every three weeks.
The physical toll of the treatments was significant. Tang experienced severe fatigue and weight loss, struggling to perform even the most basic daily tasks without assistance. After losing her hair, she felt a profound sense of insecurity, concerning changes in not only her appearance but also her independence. The emotional struggles often echoed her physical challenges, creating a tumultuous landscape as she navigated her health crisis.
Amidst these trials, Tang found strength in her family and friends who supported her through every step of her journey. With her mother by her side during treatment, and friends helping with errands and meals, she was grateful for the solid network of support that made her ordeal more bearable.
A pivotal moment in her treatment occurred after her first PET scan revealed that the lymphoma was no longer detectable. “My stage 4 cancer was completely gone after just two rounds,” she said, her hope reignited. Despite feeling weak, Tang completed all six rounds of treatment, culminating in clean scans that confirmed her status as cancer-free.
In an unexpected turn, Tang took to TikTok during her recovery, initially as a way to distract herself while resting. However, her vulnerability resonated with a broader audience. “A person told me my story mattered, whether I had 40 followers or 400,000,” she noted. Her candid posts about her experiences gained traction, reaching people who understood and could relate.
Now, as she reflects on her journey, Tang emphasises the importance of gratitude and awareness. Having overcome such a life-altering challenge, she encourages others not to take their health for granted. “If something feels off, get it checked. Better to be safe than sorry,” she advises.
As she moves forward, Tang hopes her story will resonate with those facing similar health challenges and inspire them to advocate for their wellbeing. Her experience serves as a poignant reminder of the crucial connection between body awareness and health.
