In a heartfelt and poignant decision, bride-to-be Taylor Bratton accelerated her wedding plans to include her ailing grandfather, David Bratton, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The couple tied the knot on February 1 in Irving, Texas, after planning the ceremony in just 30 days.

David, affectionately known as “Grandpa Dave,” received a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. A devastating revelation, this news came just before Thanksgiving, when Taylor’s sister discreetly informed her that the bloodwork results pointed to a form of leukaemia that could be life-threatening. Faced with the possibility of losing her grandfather, Taylor quickly realised she could not imagine saying “I do” without him present.

Upon learning of the seriousness of her grandfather’s condition, Taylor made the decision to reschedule her wedding. “I knew immediately that I couldn’t imagine getting married without him there,” she shared. When she informed David over a Zoom call about her plans to move the date and location of the wedding to accommodate him, the emotional weight of the situation became evident. Tears flowed from David as he expressed his gratitude, saying, “Wow Taylor… that’s one of the two things I wanted most. To see you get married and for Tano (great-grandson) to remember me.”
Within 24 hours, the couple was actively organising the wedding. Despite the uncertainty surrounding David’s health, Taylor was determined to hold the ceremony. “There was a real chance he wouldn’t even make it. But I didn’t care. If there was any chance he could be there in any condition, we were doing it,” she stated resolutely.
Taylor Bratton, 28, and her fiancé Salvatore Potts, 29, chose Las Colinas Country Club in Irving as their venue, a locality that held deep significance for the family as David could not travel far due to his condition. The choice of venue also bore sentimental value; Taylor fondly recalled how her grandparents spent many joyful moments there, and David had previously suggested it as the ideal spot for their celebration.
Planning a wedding on such a tight schedule proved to be a challenge, yet Taylor described the experience as a whirlwind that left little time for second-guessing. “There wasn’t really time to overthink anything,” she admitted. “Decisions just had to be made.” The intimate gathering consisted of only 17 guests, allowing for a meaningful ceremony that prioritised love and togetherness over extravagance.
Remarkably, the couple opted out of traditional wedding elements, forgoing the usual lavish details like flowers, DJs, or even a bridal party. “Our wedding day was the most emotional day of my life, but in the most beautiful way,” Taylor reflected. “There was so much love and gratitude in the room.”
To everyone’s surprise, David’s condition improved leading up to the wedding. Taylor speculated that the event may have provided him with something to strive for, suggesting there might have been a touch of divine intervention at play. She reminisced about the significance of having David present, stating, “You can imagine the most beautiful wedding in the world, but if the people who mean the most to you can’t be there, it doesn’t matter.”
During the wedding, Taylor shared a special dance with her grandfather to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” “I have never hugged my grandpa so tightly in my life. We both cried in each other’s arms just talking about how magical the night felt,” she recounted, reflecting on the profound connection they shared.
Sadly, just weeks after the wedding, David passed away on February 24. As he left the reception, he expressed his awareness that Taylor had made her decision with him in mind, highlighting the depth of their bond. Taylor’s sister comforted him by pointing in awe at the joy surrounding them, reinforcing the beauty of their final family gathering.
In remembering her grandfather, Taylor described him as “truly a warrior” and one of the most remarkable people she had known, during a life that included serving in the Vietnam War and achieving success as a CEO. Yet, for her, David’s role as her grandfather far surpassed any accolades or achievements. “He was simply the best grandfather a girl could ask for,” she concluded.
The tale of Taylor and David serves as a touching reminder of love, family, and the unforgiving passage of time—an enduring legacy captured in a moment that will be cherished forever.
