A 41-year-old man from Pennsylvania is facing serious charges after being accused of intentionally causing an explosion at his own home. Jacob Rabb has been arrested and is currently facing 25 criminal counts, which include attempted homicide, aggravated arson, and criminal mischief. This incident reportedly occurred in April 2022, and he was apprehended on March 9, 2023.

The explosion took place in Rabb’s residence located in Plum, Pennsylvania, while he, his girlfriend, and three young sons, aged 11, 6, and 2, were present. Fortunately, all members of the household managed to escape the incident. According to investigations, Rabb is alleged to have disconnected the gas line to the dryer, enabling gas to accumulate in the home and leading to the catastrophic explosion.
Witness accounts suggest that Rabb and his girlfriend were awakened by a sudden collapse of the ceiling during the blast. While Rabb claimed he did not detect any gas odour before the explosion, their eldest son, who had been playing video games in the basement, reported smelling gas, resulting in him suffering first-degree burns.
Investigators have highlighted concerning gas usage patterns in the property leading up to the explosion, indicating unusually high consumption on three separate occasions. This raised suspicions regarding the events that unfolded in the days prior to the incident. Nearly a year later, in May 2023, Rabb’s girlfriend sought a protection-from-abuse order against him, revealing further disturbing behaviour.
Days after filing the order, she reportedly found handwritten notes in their home that raised alarm. The notes included statements such as, “P.S. I did blow up the house” and “If I can’t have her, no one will.” The unsettling content of these notes prompted her to alert authorities, leading to subsequent legal actions against Rabb.
His arrest escalated a month later after allegations surfaced that he had broken into his former girlfriend’s residence, issued threats to kill her, and even held a knife to her throat. During police interrogations, Rabb admitted to disconnecting the gas valve in her home but did not confess to his alleged role in the 2022 explosion.
Fire officials, after probing the incident thoroughly, concluded that the explosion was a result of arson caused by gas vapours that were purposely released through manipulation of the gas line. Chief James Sim of the Holiday Park Fire Department expressed astonishment that the family survived the explosion, highlighting the grave nature of the incident.
Currently, Rabb is being held without bail due to the extent of the charges against him and the assessment that he poses a danger to the victim, witnesses, or the community at large. As of now, it remains unclear whether he has entered a plea regarding the charges he faces.
