Timothy Busfield, known for his roles in notable television series including “The West Wing,” is set to face serious legal challenges as he has been indicted on multiple counts of criminal sexual contact involving minors. As per a confirmation from his defence attorney, the trial is slated to commence in May 2027, with proceedings anticipated to last three weeks.

The charges against the 68-year-old actor stem from a grand jury indictment on February 6, 2027, by a Bernalillo County grand jury. He is facing four counts of third-degree felony criminal sexual contact with two boys, both under the age of 13, concerning incidents reported to have occurred in October 2022 and September 2023.

Busfield has denied all allegations since his initial surrender to the Albuquerque Police Department on January 13, 2027. He entered a not guilty plea on February 10, asserting his intention to contest the charges at every opportunity. Aware of the scrutiny surrounding the case, he waived his arraignment and opted not to attend any further pretrial court sessions, which Judge Joseph Montano approved on February 18.
Following his indictment, Busfield’s attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein, publicly questioned the validity of the case being brought against his client. Stein expressed concerns about what he perceives as significant weaknesses in the prosecution’s evidence. He asserted that the decision to move forward with the case appears to be based on factors beyond the actual facts and law, rather than a robust legal foundation.
The nature of the charges originated from a warrant issued on January 9, 2027, accusing Busfield of interacting sexually with two 11-year-old boys, although their identities have not been disclosed. Following his arrest, further allegations emerged, including a previous incident reported by Colin Swift, who alleged his daughter had been sexually abused by Busfield several years prior in California. This incident allegedly occurred while the minor was auditioning for Busfield at the B Street Theatre, where he reportedly attempted inappropriate physical contact.
In light of these serious allegations, the district attorney sought a pretrial detention order aimed at keeping Busfield in custody until the trial. However, due to New Mexico’s policies that allow for release under recognizance with or without conditions, he was granted freedom on January 20, 2027, after a lengthy hearing. His wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, was present during this hearing, visibly emotional and expressing relief upon the announcement of his release.
As part of the conditions for his release, Busfield is prohibited from possessing any firearms or dangerous weapons, consuming alcohol or illegal drugs, and having unsupervised contact with minors. Furthermore, he has been instructed not to contact the alleged victims or their families and is expected to appear at all upcoming court proceedings, albeit under the supervision of Pretrial Services.
The events surrounding Busfield’s indictment have reportedly left both him and Gilbert in a state of distress, according to their legal representative. Stein remarked that the couple is still grappling with the implications of the accusations while attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy in their lives.
Busfield’s legal and personal battles continue to be front-page news, highlighting the complexities and sensitivities surrounding allegations of child abuse. As society remains vigilant against such crimes, support resources are available for anyone who may suspect child abuse, including the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, which operates 24/7.
As the legal proceedings develop, the public waits to see how this high-profile case will unfold, particularly given Busfield’s significant standing in the entertainment industry and the gravity of the charges he faces. The outcome may very well have repercussions that extend beyond the courtrooms, influencing discussions surrounding child protection and the accountability of those in positions of power within the entertainment sector.
