Oksana Masters, the celebrated Paralympic champion, has once again shown her resilience, securing three gold medals at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy. Just weeks before the highly anticipated Games commenced on March 6, Masters faced a severe leg infection that jeopardised her ability to compete.

At 36, Masters has amassed an impressive 12 gold medals and 22 medals overall, making her the most decorated athlete in U.S. Paralympic history. Her achievement in Italy further solidifies her iconic status within the Paralympic community. However, her road to success this time around was fraught with uncertainty and health concerns.
Reflecting on her experience, Masters disclosed that just three weeks before the Games, a recurrent leg infection from the previous season landed her in the hospital for a week. “If I hadn’t received the medical help that I needed, I wouldn’t have been able to race and wouldn’t be here,” she explained, highlighting the critical support she received from Team USA’s doctors.
The rigorous drives she made to consult with the medical team in Cortina d’Ampezzo proved essential for her recovery as her training period aligned with the Olympic Games. The couple of hours spent travelling for treatment were pivotal in addressing the infection, which required extensive medication adjustments to stabilise.
Masters faced additional hurdles leading up to her events, including a concussion that added to her anxiety as the competition date drew nearer. “Getting a concussion and just waiting to be told when I was cleared to train again was incredibly challenging,” she revealed. Despite these setbacks, she maintained a level of confidence in her medical team’s ability to help her return to form, declaring, “If not, I was ready to cut up my sit-ski and create the hold, whatever I needed to still do it.”
Her determination paid off, as she went on to secured gold medals in the women’s Para biathlon sprint sitting on March 7, the women’s Para cross-country sprint sitting on March 10, and the 10-kilometre sitting Para cross-country race on March 11.
Two days prior to her first race, Masters shared her struggles on social media, noting that the previous weeks had been a “forced hard reset” that tested her endurance both physically and mentally. “It’s easy to be an athlete when everything’s going right,” she commented. “But when the hard moments come at the worst time and you’re at the bottom rebuilding, that’s when the true character of an athlete is revealed.”
After her initial event, Masters savoured a touching moment with her fiancé, fellow Paralympian Aaron Pike. They have supported each other since they began dating in 2014, and the shared experience of competing at the Games added another layer to their connection. “Seeing him right after my race, giving him a hug just before his race, was really special,” she said, praising Pike for his comforting presence.
While Masters’ historic wins are noteworthy, she stated that her “ultimate gold medal moment” would come when Pike earns his first Paralympic medal. A strong advocate for her partner, she commented on his dedication and effort throughout their years together.
Though Pike narrowly missed podium finishes, coming in fifth and sixth in his events, he still has multiple opportunities to shine before the Games conclude on March 15. As he persists in his quest for a medal, Masters remains his staunch supporter.
The 2026 Winter Paralympics not only spotlighted Masters’s remarkable achievements but also encapsulated the spirit of perseverance and dedication that defines Paralympic athletes. As viewers continue to witness these sports through NBC and Peacock, the stories of athletes like Oksana Masters and Aaron Pike will resonate, inspiring future generations.
In a sporting world often dominated by the able-bodied, the feats of Masters and her peers highlight the extraordinary capabilities of athletes who overcome significant challenges to reach the highest levels of competition.
