According to the Anaheim Police Department (APD), emergency services were summoned shortly after 12:30 p.m. when an unknown odour was detected in the backstage area. The source of the smell was identified as building contractor materials, according to APD Sergeant Matt Sutter and officials from Disneyland.

Following the incident, several cast members were treated by paramedics on-site. While most were released after receiving assistance, seven employees experienced severe symptoms, including dizziness and shortness of breath. These individuals were swiftly transported to local hospitals for further medical attention.
In response to this situation, Disneyland authorities took immediate precautionary measures. Nearby areas in the park were temporarily closed to guests while staff worked to assess and mitigate any further risks. As of Tuesday afternoon, officials stated that they anticipated reopening these areas soon.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, police confirmed that there were no concerns for the safety of park visitors. The park remained operational, although adjustments were made to ensure the safety of both employees and guests in the immediate area.
The “Star Tours” attraction, which draws inspiration from the iconic Star Wars franchise, has been a fixture at Disneyland since its debut in 1987. Over the years, the motion simulator ride has undergone several revisions, most notably a significant update in 2011 that incorporated more recent Star Wars films and series into the experience.
Disneyland officials have emphasised their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all staff and visitors. They have assured the public that the safety protocols in place were followed during this incident, allowing for a quick response and effective management of the situation.
As investigations continue into the specifics surrounding the hazardous materials involved, the focus remains on the employees who were affected. Their health and recovery remain a priority as the park navigates through this unexpected disruption.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in amusement parks, particularly during ongoing renovation and maintenance work. Disneyland, a long-standing leader in the theme park industry, is expected to conduct a thorough review of its safety protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future.
As the situation unfolds, updates will be provided to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence in Disneyland’s operational safety standards. Visitors are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements and to prioritise their well-being while enjoying the park’s attractions.
