Tommy DeCarlo, who rose to prominence as the lead singer of the rock band Boston following the passing of original vocalist Brad Delp in 2007, has died at the age of 60. His family confirmed the news on social media, sharing that he passed away on March 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

In a heartfelt message released by his children, Annie, Talia, and Tommy Jr., they shared, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo.” They described him as someone who fought valiantly against his illness, stating, “He fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.” The family has requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time of grief and support one another.

DeCarlo’s health issues began in September 2025, when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. A GoFundMe campaign initiated to assist with his medical expenses highlighted the sudden onset of his health problems. In late September, he suffered a brain bleed that necessitated an emergency craniotomy. During this procedure, doctors found multiple melanoma masses, both on his brain and in his lungs. His family noted, “He amazed us by recovering from the surgery and beginning treatment,” but sadly, he experienced another brain bleed, leading to a month-long hospital stay from late November to December.

In October 2025, DeCarlo took to social media to inform fans about his health challenges, stating that he had to step back from performing to focus on recovery. He characterised this decision as difficult but necessary, emphasising the importance of his well-being before returning to the stage. Consequently, the band had to cancel the remainder of their 2025 shows.

Before stepping into the spotlight as Boston’s lead singer, DeCarlo led a vastly different life. He worked as a credit manager at a Home Depot in North Carolina and was a self-taught pianist. Music had always been a significant part of his life; his early inspirations included the late Brad Delp. DeCarlo first gained attention by posting covers of Boston songs on MySpace, along with an original piece he penned in tribute to Delp. Following a friend’s suggestion, he shared his work with the band, catching the ear of guitarist Tom Scholz with his rendition of “Don’t Look Back.”

This opportunity eventually led to DeCarlo performing at a tribute concert for Delp, after which he was invited to join Boston full-time. He became the voice of the band, delivering classic hits such as “More Than a Feeling,” “Rock and Roll Band,” and “Peace of Mind” to enthusiastic audiences worldwide. His tenure with Boston included the release of the album *Life, Love & Hope* in 2013, which marked his only studio recording with the group.

In addition to his work with Boston, DeCarlo also pursued personal musical ventures. In 2012, he formed a band named DECARLO with his son, and this ensemble debuted its first album in 2020. He extended his artistic expression by releasing an audiobook titled *Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story*, giving fans a deeper insight into his journey from an everyday life to becoming a recognised musician.
