Darron Lee, a former NFL linebacker, found himself back inside a Tennessee courtroom on 9 March during a preliminary hearing related to charges of first-degree murder. The 31-year-old has been accused in the tragic death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpétuo, aged 29, who was discovered lifeless in their residence in Ooltewah, a suburb of Chattanooga, on 5 February.

The courtroom proceedings saw prosecutors presenting critical evidence, including body camera footage of police officers who were first on the scene and communications allegedly made by Lee to the AI chatbot ChatGPT shortly before law enforcement arrived. Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp highlighted Lee’s use of the chatbot in a manner suggesting he was seeking advice on how to handle the situation following the incident.
During the hearing, Wamp detailed one prompt from Lee where he expressed distress over Perpétuo’s condition, stating, “Fiancée did her crazy thing again and now she’s messed up,” referring to her injuries, which he claimed were self-inflicted. He also sought guidance on what to tell a friend regarding the situation, asking for advice about a non-responsive individual and the appropriate steps to take when contacting the police.
Further communication from Lee included queries about whether stab wounds could result from a fall. His last message purportedly described a chaotic scene, with blood described as ‘all over the damn place.’ The exchange casts a shadow over his assertions regarding the circumstances leading to Perpétuo’s death.
Body camera footage shown in court depicted Lee speaking with a deputy, wherein he recounted discovering Perpétuo unresponsive on the couch prior to calling emergency services. “I came down and she was laying on the couch on her side,” he stated, as recorded by the responding officer. The deputies at the scene reported evidence of a violent altercation, including substantial blood spatter and broken glass, raising troubling questions about the events that transpired that day.
Lee’s public defender, Mike Little, acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding the circumstances of the incident, stating, “We don’t know what happened inside of that house. We know something happened inside of that house but we don’t know what.”
The coroner’s report outlined extensive injuries sustained by Perpétuo, including several hematomas, abrasions, and lacerations on her face, which contributed to the conclusion that her death resulted from blunt force trauma. Given the serious nature of the allegations, Lee has been held without bail at the Hamilton County Jail since the incident occurred.
Notably, this incident is not Lee’s first run-in with the law. Earlier in 2023, he was arrested on allegations of assaulting his mother and had previously faced legal issues related to the mother of his child. Although he managed to avoid substantial jail time in those instances by negotiating a plea deal in Ohio, the gravity of the current accusations has placed him under severe scrutiny.

Amid the unfolding legal drama, Perpétuo’s family has initiated a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against Lee, seeking justice for their loss. On a GoFundMe page established to assist with funeral costs, her cousin paid tribute, stating, “She was loved by so many and loved those around her with her whole heart.”
