University of Oklahoma Rugby Player Died Days After Being Struck, and Family Will Sue in Homicide Death

The family of Jozsef Pal, a 23-year-old rugby player at the University of Oklahoma, has initiated the process of filing a civil lawsuit following his tragic death in March 2025. The petition, lodged in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, outlines their belief that there were significant delays in obtaining medical assistance for Pal after he suffered a brain injury during a night out.

According to details from the petition, one of the core allegations is that reasonable steps were not taken when Pal showed visible signs of distress after he was struck in an altercation. The family’s legal representative, attorney Chloe Glass, has emphasised that the aim of the filing is to achieve transparency and accountability regarding the events that unfolded on the night of Pal’s injury.

On the evening of March 1, 2025, Pal was enjoying time with his teammates at Campus Corner following a rugby match earlier that day. Around 11:00 p.m., he entered Logie’s bar, where he began consuming alcohol. The petition indicates that his level of intoxication was apparent, leading staff at the bar to ask him to leave due to his impaired condition.

Following his departure from Logie’s, Pal moved to another venue called The Porch, where he continued to drink. It is alleged in the petition that by this stage, his state of intoxication was even more pronounced, with signs that were either apparent or should have been apparent to those serving him. The petition further claims that Pal was left unattended for an unrecorded duration, raising concerns about the responsibility of those establishments serving him alcohol.

At approximately 3 a.m. on March 2, Pal approached a parked white Ford F-250 in the Revvy lot and attempted to open a locked rear passenger door. Eyewitness accounts suggest that three men inside the vehicle responded by physically ejecting him from the vicinity, pushing him approximately 15 feet away. The petition argues that this response was disproportionate, asserting that Pal did not pose an imminent threat that would warrant such force.

The situation escalated, culminating in one of the individuals allegedly delivering a critical blow to Pal’s head. Witness statements reportedly capture one of the men admitting to police that he “overreacted” and struck Pal. Following the altercation, Pal fell and hit his head on the concrete ground, resulting in immediate unconsciousness, from which he never recovered.

Shockingly, the petition also alleges that the three men recorded videos while Pal lay on the ground, unconscious and bleeding. It was claimed that one individual made a mockery of the situation, filming Pal’s injury while failing to provide any meaningful medical assistance. Alarmingly, the document states that a 911 call was not made until around 3:47 a.m., approximately 30 to 40 minutes after Pal lost consciousness.

When authorities from the Norman Police Department arrived, they did so in response to reports of a carjacking and found Pal unresponsive about 15 feet away from the truck. He was subsequently transported to a medical facility, where he was declared dead on March 7, 2025, after being removed from life support. The medical examiner later classified Pal’s death as a homicide, attributing it to acute blunt force trauma sustained during the earlier assault.

The family’s petition seeks punitive damages, which they hope will be assessed by a jury during the trial proceedings. As of now, no criminal charges have been filed against the individuals involved in the incident. A representative from the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office indicated that the evidence collected did not substantiate any actions that could lead to criminal liability in this case.

Commenting on the unfolding situation, the City of Norman, also named in the lawsuit, refrained from making any statements, citing the pending litigation. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign set up to support Pal during his recovery had earlier portrayed him as “one of the toughest and most dedicated guys we know,” highlighting the profound loss felt by his family and friends.

As this case develops, the Pal family continues to advocate for justice and accountability concerning the events leading up to and following their son’s tragic death. The expected lawsuit aims to reveal the circumstances surrounding the incident and the response of those present during that fateful night.
