A 21-year-old man from West Des Moines, Iowa, has been charged with serious offences after allegedly attacking his mother with a knife during a domestic dispute concerning a speaker. Nathan Norrell faces charges of attempted murder and going armed with intent, following the incident that took place on February 28.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing at a residence in the 6300 block of Center Street at around 7:28 p.m. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers found the victim with significant injuries. Emergency medical services (EMS) provided treatment on the scene before transporting the injured woman to hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Norrell was subsequently arrested and is currently being held at the Dallas County Jail with bail set at $750,000. Investigators have indicated that the victim is his mother, clarifying that the incident was not random and that there were no other suspects involved. In her desperation, she called 911, at which point Norrell fled the scene, arranging for an Uber to take him to his grandfather’s house. It was there that he surrendered to police.
When interrogated, Norrell reportedly claimed that he blacked out due to a combination of alcohol and medications he had taken, and he could not remember his actions during the incident. His mother, however, described the attack as intentional, expressing that she feared for her life. She also recounted a similar episode that occurred two weeks prior, where she found Norrell unconscious in a bedroom next to a knife.
Court documents indicate that Norrell has a troubled history, with two other pending cases against him in Dallas County. These earlier charges, filed in December 2022, include interference with official acts, public intoxication, and attempted burglary, among others. The latest charges of attempted murder and going armed with intent mark a significant escalation in the severity of his alleged criminal behaviour.
