Car Wash Employee Accused of Stealing Engagement Ring from Customer’s Vehicle and Attempting to Pawn It

A car wash employee in Delaware has been charged with stealing an engagement ring from a customer’s vehicle. The incident came to light after the victim’s efforts to recover the ring, which has since been successfully returned.

On 15 February, Delaware State Police (DSP) were called to the Magic Car Wash located on Naamans Road in Wilmington to investigate a report of theft. The customer had left their engagement ring inside their car, presumably by mistake, shortly before it was washed. Upon discovering that the ring was missing, the distressed customer reported the incident to the authorities.

During their investigation, officers spoke with several employees from the car wash, including 24-year-old Jose Gonzales-Morales, who was questioned regarding the missing item. Despite initial inquiries, no leads surfaced at that time, and the ring’s whereabouts remained unknown.

Subsequently, the victim took the matter into their own hands by creating flyers featuring an image of the missing engagement ring. These flyers were circulated among local pawn shops in an effort to alert shop owners to watch for the stolen item.

This proactive approach proved to be effective. On 23 February, Gonzales-Morales visited a pawn shop in the Wilmington area, where he attempted to sell the very ring that was reported missing. Fortunately, the keen-eyed owner of the establishment recognised the ring from the flyer, prompting them to take action.

Upon recognising the stolen item, the pawn shop owner alerted the authorities, and the engagement ring was returned to its rightful owner. The police then launched an operation to apprehend Gonzales-Morales.

In a swift response to the discovery, Gonzales-Morales was arrested on 28 February without any incident. The DSP has since confirmed that he faces serious charges, including two felonies: theft involving property valued at $1,500 or more and making a false statement to law enforcement officers.

After his arrest, Gonzales-Morales was taken to Troop 1, where he was formally charged. Following his arraignment at Justice of the Peace Court 11, he was granted release on a $2,500 unsecured bond, allowing him to await further legal proceedings outside of custody.

The case highlights the importance of community involvement and vigilance in combating theft. The victim’s determination to recover the sentimental piece of jewellery and the pawn shop owner’s quick recognition played critical roles in resolving the matter swiftly.

As the case moves forward, it continues to attract attention, bringing discussions around theft and the responsibilities of employees in service industries to the forefront.
