Kelly Ripa is reflecting on her significant milestone as she celebrates 25 years of co-hosting the beloved television programme, Live With Regis and Kelly. In a recent interview with Variety, Ripa shared insights into her early experiences on the show and disclosed that it took her several years to feel at ease in her role.

The journey for Ripa began in late 2000 when she made her debut as a guest co-host alongside the legendary Regis Philbin. At that time, she was best known for her role on the soap opera All My Children, and she was not actively seeking another project. “My contract at All My Children had a year and a half left, and I decided at that point that I would just stop working and raise my kids,” Ripa explained. She noted that she was not particularly focused on replacing Kathie Lee Gifford, who was departing from the show.

Ripa recounted that her initial appearance as a guest host garnered a positive audience reaction, which prompted the show’s producers to invite her back for additional guest hosting stints. “I really never thought about it again and then I got a call straight away to come back and do it again,” she said. By December of that year, Ripa had signed a contract to officially join the hosting team, having hosted just a handful of times.
Despite the seemingly rapid ascent to co-hosting, Ripa admitted that immense pressure accompanied her new position. “When there’s something at stake, a far greater pressure is on you when you are a co-host versus when you’re just a fill-in person,” she confessed. This pressure left her feeling apprehensive about her abilities, a sensation that lasted until roughly eight years into her tenure on the show. “I felt terrified…It really took a long time to get comfortable,” she added.
Following the retirement of Philbin in 2011, Ripa assumed the lead role, partnering with various co-hosts, including Michael Strahan and Ryan Seacrest. Currently, she shares the spotlight with Mark Consuelos, her husband of 30 years. Ripa expressed surprise at how quickly Consuelos adapted to the demands of hosting. “What surprised me about Mark is how comfortable and good at it he was immediately. Where it took me eight years to become comfortable, it took him maybe eight days!” she remarked.
The show has seen notable transformations over the years, with the chemistry between its hosts often cited as a key factor in its lasting appeal. Ripa’s candidness about her insecurities and personal journey resonates with viewers, adding depth to her on-screen persona.
In addition to reflecting on her past, Ripa also took time to honour her late co-host, Regis Philbin, who passed away in July 2020 at the age of 88. Philbin, who originally hosted Live! with Kathie Lee Gifford in 1988, left a lasting legacy in daytime television. Ripa’s tribute serves as a reminder of the strong bond they shared and the impact he had on her career.
As she celebrates her milestone, Ripa continues to evolve in her role within the daytime television landscape. Her ability to connect with audiences and adapt alongside her ever-changing co-hosts remains a hallmark of her success. Viewers can expect to see more of her authentic and relatable personality as she journeys through the next chapter of her hosting career.
Ripa’s 25 years on the show not only highlights her accomplishments but also showcases her resilience and determination in a highly competitive industry. Her path offers an inspiring narrative for aspiring hosts and entertainers, proving that sometimes, the most rewarding journeys begin when least expected.
