In an effort to streamline operations and improve the customer experience, Burger King has rolled out a new AI-powered platform named BK Assistant, affectionately referred to as “Patty.” This innovative system is designed to assist restaurant staff by managing orders, monitoring inventory, and enhancing workflow in real time. Currently in pilot phase across 500 locations, the fast-food giant aims for a nationwide launch by the end of 2026.

Patty operates through cloud-connected headsets and is powered by an OpenAI model tailored to fit Burger King’s unique operational framework. The assistant provides a voice-enabled interface that integrates typically siloed systems within the restaurant, allowing for improved communication and efficiency among staff.
A spokesperson for Burger King clarified that Patty is not intended to scrutinise employees based on specific language used during interactions. Instead, the focus is on fostering exceptional hospitality and providing managers with actionable insights about overall service patterns. “In limited pilot restaurants, we’ve explored using aggregated keywords — such as ‘welcome,’ ‘please,’ and ‘thank you’ — as signals to help managers understand service trends, rather than assessing individual performance,” they explained.
One of Patty’s key functions is to alert managers when menu items are out of stock, thereby removing them from digital displays in real time. Additionally, the assistant offers guidance for food preparation directly on the line and analyses audio from drive-thru transactions to enhance order accuracy. This comprehensive support system aims to minimise errors and provide a seamless experience for customers.
Thibault Roux, Burger King’s Chief Digital Officer, emphasised that the primary goal of the BK Assistant is to serve as a “coaching and operational support tool.” He stated, “This is all meant to be a coaching tool,” confirming that the focus is on enhancing employee performance rather than surveilling them. Roux also underscored an ongoing effort to refine how the AI captures the tone of conversations, which could further benefit interactions between staff and customers.
Recent research into human-AI interactions suggests that the manner in which individuals communicate with AI can influence the efficiency of responses. A 2024 study cited by the BBC highlighted that politeness and clear instructions can play a role in improving outcomes when dealing with AI systems. Despite this, experts caution that much of the advice surrounding optimised AI interaction is anecdotal. The consensus remains that AI models function primarily as statistical tools rather than intelligent entities.
Moreover, Sander Schulhoff, an entrepreneur and AI researcher, pointed out the significance of providing concrete examples when working with AI, especially for complex tasks. He indicated that while role-playing prompts can sometimes be beneficial, they may also lead to inaccuracies. Rick Battle, a Broadcom engineer, added that being explicit about goals is essential when interacting with AI, rather than attempting to flatter or influence outcomes.
For Burger King employees, the implementation of Patty means a greater focus on present engagement with customers. The company believes that hospitality remains a fundamentally human aspect of their service, and the introduction of this technology is aimed at supporting teams in maintaining that human connection during transactions.
By integrating technology that aids rather than replaces staff, Burger King is taking significant steps towards enhancing operational efficiency. The rollout of BK Assistant showcases the company’s commitment to balancing innovative solutions with traditional customer service values, reinforcing the importance of human interaction in the fast-food sector.
