At the heart of the film is Field’s character, Tova, a widow who works the night shift as a cleaner at a local aquarium. Tova finds an unexpected companion in Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus. Van Pelt, the author, shared her excitement about the film’s transformation from page to screen. Set in a fictional town in the Pacific Northwest, the production took place in the picturesque locale of Deep Cove, Vancouver. Field remarked on the magnificent scenery while describing a particularly impactful scene that was enhanced by the dramatic weather. “It began pouring down freezing, icy cold rain,” she recalled, noting how it contributed to the scene’s emotional depth.

The chemistry between Field and Pullman during auditions was undeniable, leading director Newman to deem Pullman the ideal actor to play Cameron. “Their first read together had incredible chemistry and shared humour,” she noted. This authentic connection resonated deeply with both the cast and crew, echoing Van Pelt’s sentiments about the pair’s on-screen magic.

Reflecting on her role, Field mentioned how portraying Tova allowed her to connect with an aspect of her own identity. “I think the unique thing about Tova is that she’s an old lady and so am I,” Field, now 79, stated with amusement. Yet, she affirmed that the fictional Tova is “so different” from herself, highlighting the complexities of character portrayal.
