Lupita Nyong’o, the acclaimed actress known for her role in “12 Years a Slave,” has publicly shared her ongoing battle with uterine fibroids, revealing a significant increase in the number of growths since her initial diagnosis in 2014. During an appearance on the Today show, the 42-year-old discussed the challenges she faces with her condition, which has led to more than 50 fibroids forming in her uterus, one of which has reached the size of an orange.

Nyong’o first discovered the presence of fibroids shortly after her career-defining win at the Oscars. She underwent surgery to remove 23 growths at that time, but the recent news has been disheartening, as she now faces the possibility of surgery once again or continuing to live with the painful symptoms associated with this condition.
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous tumours that can result in severe discomfort and a range of symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, pelvic pain, and frequent urinary urges. For many women, these issues can significantly affect their day-to-day lives.
As Nyong’o reflected on her condition, she expressed hesitance about pursuing a myomectomy, a surgical procedure designed to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus. “I’m not ready to make that decision,” Nyong’o stated. “It’s quite invasive… and it’s a big threat to our reproductive organs.”
Throughout her journey, Nyong’o has voiced feelings of isolation and shame regarding her fibroid diagnosis. “I felt alone and quite scared for my reproductive health,” she admitted, outlining her initial struggle to confront the reality of her condition.
Despite the challenges she has faced, Nyong’o has found a sense of empowerment through speaking openly about her experiences. She has connected with a community of women grappling with similar health issues, stating, “I’ve found community. I’ve locked arms with women who have been fighting this fight for a long time.”
While fibroids can be a common occurrence, Nyong’o believes it is crucial to destigmatise discussions surrounding the condition. “There’s a lot of power in speaking up,” she noted, emphasising how sharing her story has bolstered her resolve to raise awareness and advocate for better treatment options.
In her quest for improved health solutions, Nyong’o is currently working to fund research aimed at establishing less invasive and non-invasive treatments for fibroids. “I think it’s high time we speak up to ensure that this is no longer trivialised and it’s no longer considered normal just because it’s common,” she stated.
The actress’s bravery in addressing her health struggles has resonated with her audience, bringing attention to an issue that affects many women yet often remains under-discussed. Through her advocacy, Nyong’o aims not only to highlight her own experience but also to encourage others to seek support and information regarding uterine fibroids.
Nyong’o’s commitment to raising awareness and advocating for change serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of open dialogue surrounding women’s health issues. Her experience underscores the value of community in facing health challenges, and her message encourages others to join the conversation, ultimately fostering a collective pursuit of better understanding and improved healthcare solutions.
