2 Vehicles Trapped in Large Sinkhole After Road Collapses

Two vehicles found themselves trapped in a significant sinkhole in the Aksarben neighbourhood of Omaha, Nebraska, following a road collapse on 24th February 2026. Fortunately, both drivers emerged unscathed from the incident, with assistance from bystanders.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of 67th and Pacific Streets, prompting a swift response from the Omaha Police Department. Officer Sarah Martier elaborated on the situation, stating that the officers found a large sinkhole east of the intersection, into which both a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck and a maroon Jeep SUV had fallen.

Despite the dramatic nature of the accident, both drivers were fortunate to escape injury. The driver of the pickup was able to exit the sinkhole independently, and, together with passersby, he assisted the driver of the SUV in getting out as well. Specifically, Pacific Street was closed from 66th to 69th Street, while 67th Street remained open for north and southbound traffic. Officer Martier reiterated the extent of the road closure, stressing the need for caution in the area.

According to reports from OPD Lt. Dan Martin, the sinkhole not only spanned both westbound lanes but also extended significantly underground, raising concerns about potential further collapses in the area. After the situation was stabilised, towing crews were dispatched to remove both vehicles from the sinkhole, which was completed successfully without further incident. The scene was cleared promptly, allowing for traffic management to resume in the surrounding streets.
