A devastating accident occurred in Polk County, Oregon, on February 23, resulting in the tragic death of a man following a collision between a school bus and a sport utility vehicle. Around 10 a.m., local officials responded to a report of the crash on Highway 22, near the intersection with Highway 51. According to the Oregon State Police, the school bus, which was part of Salem-Keizer Public Schools, was carrying 30 students and two adults back to Salem after a field trip to Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
The bus driver, 33-year-old Chandra Jean Milkovich-Howard, attempted to make a left turn onto Highway 51. In doing so, she entered the path of an eastbound Honda Pilot. This resulted in a head-on collision that ultimately led to the tragic outcome.
The driver of the Honda, 68-year-old Luke Richard Brittan from Independence, Oregon, was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Miraculously, Milkovich-Howard and one student sustained only minor injuries and were subsequently taken to a local medical facility for treatment.
In the fallout from the collision, authorities cited Milkovich-Howard for making an unsafe turn, highlighting the potentially legal ramifications of the accident. The road was closed for approximately four hours while investigations took place, causing significant disruption in the area.
In a statement following the incident, Aaron Harada, a spokesperson for Salem-Keizer Public Schools, expressed profound sorrow for the loss of Brittan’s life. “This is a terribly tragic event,” he stated, emphasising the school district’s commitment to cooperating with the ongoing investigation while ensuring support for those involved in the incident.
As part of the district’s immediate response, students who were on board the bus were safely transported back to North Salem High School. Counselling services and emotional support were swiftly made available for the affected individuals, recognising the traumatic nature of the crash.
The Salem Fire Department, which was among the first responders to the scene, noted the importance of effective communication and teamwork across various agencies during such incidents. Their efforts ensured that the situation was managed as effectively as possible amidst the chaos of the aftermath.
