Lindsey Vonn, the celebrated Olympic skier, has recently provided a candid update on her recovery following a severe injury sustained during the 2026 Winter Olympics. Cristiano Ronaldo, the renowned football icon, expressed his support in the comments section of Vonn’s post, offering motivational words to encourage her during this challenging time. He stated, “Champions are defined by the moments they win, and the moments they refuse to give up. The mountains you conquered were never bigger than the strength you carry. Keep fighting. Legends always rise.” To this, Vonn responded with gratitude, acknowledging the significance of Ronaldo’s words, especially coming from such a prestigious athlete.

In her video, Vonn described the traumatic events following her crash, which aggravated into compartment syndrome—an extremely painful condition caused by increased pressure in the muscle compartments of the leg. This injury can severely restrict blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to muscles and nerves, causing significant pain. For Vonn, the experience has been nothing short of devastating.
After two weeks in the hospital, Vonn shared her relief at being discharged, although the emotional weight of her injury and recovery has taken its toll. “This has been by far the most extreme and painful and challenging injury I’ve ever faced in my entire life, times one hundred,” she explained. Her resilience shines through as she commits to her recovery journey.
Vonn credited her long-time doctor, Tom Hackett, with saving her leg. She emotionally recounted how he performed a fasciotomy, a surgical procedure that involves cutting open the leg to relieve pressure and prevent further damage. “Dr. Tom Hackett saved my leg. He did what’s called a fasciotomy, where he cut open both sides of my leg… he saved me,” she stated with visible emotion, underscoring the gratitude she feels for his life-saving intervention.
The incident that led to Vonn’s serious injury occurred on February 8, mere seconds into her run at the women’s downhill event at the Olympics. In a moment of miscalculation, Vonn clipped a gate and was thrown off course, resulting in the catastrophic fracture of her tibia. Not only did she endure this painful injury, but she also mentioned that she had previously torn her ACL during a World Cup race in Switzerland on January 30, leading to a particularly difficult period for the athlete.
As of now, Vonn has transitioned to a wheelchair and is adapting to these significant physical challenges, even revealing that she has also fractured her right ankle during the incident. She remains optimistic about her rehabilitation process, indicating her determination to recover sufficiently to use crutches in the following weeks.
Despite the severe nature of her injuries, Vonn insists she bears no regrets for her choices in pursuing her skiing career. “It’s going to be a long road, but I always fight. I’ll keep going,” she affirmed, showcasing her unwavering spirit and commitment to overcoming adversity.
Vonn’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of life-altering challenges. With the support of fans, fellow athletes like Ronaldo, and her medical team, she is determined to make a full recovery and continue sharing her passion for skiing with the world.
