On 3 November, Chris Pappas made history by becoming the first openly gay man elected to the United States Senate, securing a significant victory for the Democratic Party in New Hampshire. The 46-year-old politician achieved this milestone by defeating Republican opponent John E. Sununu, a win that has been celebrated by supporters and advocates for LGBTQ+ representation across the country.
In an emotional acceptance speech delivered after the election results were confirmed, Pappas expressed gratitude towards his family and supporters. He spoke fondly of his parents, acknowledging their contributions to his sense of public service and community service. “To my amazing parents, who have set the best example of public service and hard work, and giving back to the community, and unconditional love,” he remarked, highlighting the values instilled in him since childhood.

Celebrating alongside his husband, Vann Bentley, Pappas acknowledged him directly in his speech: “I want to thank the guy next to me, my amazing husband, Vann.” The couple embraced amid cheers from the crowd, with Pappas humourously remarking on the enthusiastic reception Bentley received, suggesting, “Alright, the wrong person was on the ballot, apparently.” The politician made clear that, regardless of the outcome of the election, he felt fortunate to be loved. “Tonight, win, lose, or draw, I’m the luckiest guy because I’m married to a man that I love,” he stated, emphasising that love and truth ultimately triumphed in the face of negativity and misinformation.

Pappas and Bentley’s life together in Manchester is filled with family-oriented activities, including their enjoyment of running, competitive board games, and spending quality time with nieces and nephews. Pappas has a diverse background, being the descendant of Greek immigrants, and he has dedicated his professional life not only to public service but also to running his family’s restaurant, a local establishment that has been part of the community for 109 years.
The election night brought about profound changes in the political landscape, as the Democratic Party was able to regain control of both the Senate and House. By the following day, results indicated a 54-44 majority for Democrats in the Senate, further bolstered by the election of other historic candidates. Pappas’ victory was one of many as Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black female governor of Georgia, and Deb Haaland was inaugurated as the first female Native American governor in New Mexico.
These wins represent a broader shift toward inclusivity and diversity within US politics, suggesting that voters are increasingly supportive of representatives who reflect the nation’s varied demographics. Pappas’ achievement has been hailed as a sign of progress, a celebration not just for the LGBTQ+ community but also for those advocating for a more inclusive political environment.
In the wake of these results, former President Donald Trump reacted on social media, stating that he was not on the ballot for the midterms and suggesting he would have won by a landslide if he had been. He labelled Fox News as partly responsible for the Republicans’ losses, provoking a spectrum of responses from both supporters and critics.
Despite the disappointment expressed by some within the Republican party, Trump indicated to The New York Times that he would accept the election outcomes. “We’ll probably work something out,” he noted, underscoring a willingness to engage with the new political dynamics moving forward.
Chris Pappas’s ground-breaking victory is a powerful reminder of how far progress has been made, yet it also highlights the work that still lies ahead for many who advocate for equality and representation within the political sphere. As Pappas steps into his new role, his journey serves as an inspiration, reinforcing the notion that love and commitment can triumph over adversity in all areas of life, including the often tumultuous arena of politics.
